Katniss realized that, without her hunting, her family wouldn't have enough to eat, a serious problem in District 12, where starvation is common. As a result of these conditions, Katniss has grown into a tough, unsentimental, and practical girl.

For example, Katniss Everdeen has a fatal flaw of valuing others (beginning with her sister) and putting herself last. She does this numerous times, especially with Peeta. This major flaw in her character nearly gets her killed several times. She must overcome it to survive.
Katniss has a few major weaknesses, all of which contribute to making her a realistic, well-rounded character. She can't deal with injuries; they make her feel sick. She can be very rash, making snap decisions that don't always work out for her and her allies.
Her love for Prim is so strong that she is willing to sacrifice herself for her sister, something that not many others in the district would do for their family members. Through flashback, Katniss reveals how she grew up as a survivor after her father's death and her mother's descent into depression.
It's obvious from the first "Hunger Games" trailer that Katniss' bravery goes far beyond her physical strength. Her sentimentality is just one facet of what makes her so strong.
When Haymitch asks what their special skills are, Peeta claims to have none; Katniss says she can hunt, but doesn't know whether she's a good hunter. Then, Peeta begins to talk about how Katniss has incredible hunting abilities and how adept she is with a bow and arrow.

In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Part of what instills Katniss Everdeen with such heroic strength and determination is the death of her father in a tragic mining accident years prior to the events of the film, and having an emotionally disconnected mother as a result. Both losses have forced her to survive by her own means.
Katniss has just learned that Peeta has romantic feelings for her, and initially she feels she is being used. She becomes angry with Peeta as a result, going so far as to shove him over an urn of flowers.

Katniss is definitely afraid of something happening to her family, especially her little sis, but when it comes to her own safety, she can be fearless. Of course, she's worried about dying in the Games, but it doesn't keep her from getting in the face of just about every authority figure she meets.
People who suffer from PTSD can also experience trouble sleeping, which both Katniss and Peeta deal with, exhibit self-destructive or reckless behavior or can be aggressive and irritable. Both tributes also have trouble controlling themselves and often react aggressively to situations that upset them.
"The disability erasure still gets me. Peeta has his leg amputated following the events in the first games, and he has a prosthetic leg for the rest of the series. This is completely ignored.
“Katniss was an introvert and a survivor,” he told the publication. “She was quite quiet and stoic, you could almost say [she was] asexual. Lucy Gray is the opposite. She wears her sexuality on her sleeve, [and] she really is a performer,” he said, referring to the character of Lucy as the “anti-Katniss.”

Gale, Katniss' 18-year-old hunting partner, is well-liked by many girls in the District 12. When he first meets Katniss in the woods, he believes that her name is Catnip, and so this becomes his permanent nickname for her.
