Of course, not all of The Hobbit dwarves are alive by the end — Thorin Oakenshield, Fíli and Kíli all perish during the climactic Battle of Five Armies. The Hobbit dwarves Óin, Balin and Ori all die prior to The Lord of the Rings, when a colony is sent from Erebor to reclaim the Mines of Moria.
Balin and Ori and Oin, along with a number of others not part of the Company, later went to Moria hoping to reclaim it for the dwarves, but within five years they were all dead.
In Third Age 1980, Dwarves mining deep in Moria released the Balrog. It killed King Durin VI later that year, acquiring the name Durin's Bane, and in the next year it killed Nain I, his son and successor. The last remaining Dwarves decided to abandon Moria, and it became the home to the Orcs of the Misty Mountains.
How many Dwarves died in the Battle of Five Armies?

Did the line of Durin end with Thorin?
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
Death. After ruling as Moria's Lord for about five years, Balin was slain by Orcs on November 10 TA 2994, after going to look upon the Mirromere alone. His body was recovered after a battle, and entombed in the Chamber of Mazarbul.
Unfortunately, the Fellowship's journey only confirmed what he had feared. Although Gimli knew that Moria could be dangerous in the book, he did not know about Balin's death in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie possibly due to slow communication and Dwarves' perception of time.
Did All The Dwarves Die In Moria? While six have perished, seven dwarves from The Hobbit are still alive when The Lord of the Rings begins, only one of which actually appears in the movies.
There's only one real moment in The Fellowship of the Ring that touches upon Gimli's past: when he enters the Mines of Moria in hopes of seeing his cousin, Balin, who was once Lord of Moria.
Gimli was born in the Ered Luin in the Third Age, son of Glóin. Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.
So when Gandalf confronts the Balrog on the Bridge of Moria he faces a real and deadly danger. But he realizes the Quest is in peril and so sacrifices himself to ensure their escape; he falls from the bridge and fights the Balrog, but is himself killed. Yet he returns and is enhanced in power and clothed in white.
Though Gimli has no children, he is not the last Dwarf of Middle-earth. After the fall of Sauron, his people continued to thrive in the Lonely Mountain. Gimli made his home in Rohan, in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and many of his kinsfolk came with him.
It told how Balin discovered Durin's Axe, and established a small colony, but it was overrun by orcs and Balin was killed by an orc archer in Dimrill Dale. Thus he died in the same place as his father, having been self-proclaimed Lord of Moria for less than five years.
Unfortunately, whilst in Moria, Gimli discovered Balin's Tomb as well as evidence that all of the Dwarves who had attempted to retake Moria had been slain years prior; his uncle Óin had been killed by the Watcher in the Water.
Gimli didn't know about Moria's fate because there had been no communication between Erebor and Moria for 25 years, and the Dwarves were hopeful and did not want to accept failure until there was certain news.
Simply put, he was the only one available. There were only two dwarves at the council of Elrond, Gimli and his father Gloin. The Dwarves were fighting Sauron's forces constantly in their own campaign and couldn't spare many. Gloin was also much older now, it was absolutely his son's turn to go on a big journey.
There had been no communication from Moria for quite some time, but no one knew exactly what had happened there, or why the colony had gone silent. Gandalf definitely did not know about the Balrog, or even about the orc attacks that had sent Balin and all who were with him to an early grave.
In TA 2941, Gimli was prevented from traveling with his father on the Quest of Erebor because Thorin and Company thought he was too young, though Gimli, being in his sixties, considered himself ripe for adventure and was disappointed to be left behind.
When The Fellowship is taken to Galadriel, she and Boromir have a telepathic conversation which immediately causes Boromir to burst into tears. She senses his desires for the Ring but tells him not to give in because even now, there is hope.
From TA 2989 to TA 2994, the re-colonization of Moria was an attempted expedition led by Balin to re-take the ancient Dwarven Kingdom of Khazad-dûm. An initial effort was successful in reclaiming some of Moria from the Orcs.
With Thorin's death in the battle, Dáin became King of Durin's Folk and King under the Mountain, the first not of the main line. After the battle, Dáin thanked the Great Eagles for their timely intervention, crowning their chief with gold and swearing the Dwarves to everlasting friendship with them.
Eventually, Legolas came to Ithilien with some of his people, with his father's leave, to live out his remaining time in Middle-earth helping to restore the woodlands that had been war-torn. After Aragorn's death, Legolas made a ship in Ithilien and left Middle-earth to go over the sea.
Thorin stated that Dori was the strongest of the Dwarves in the company. Dori (and Nori) shared Bilbo's opinion that meals should be plentiful and frequent., and also it is said that Dori was "a decent fellow despite his grumbling".
