Maul's head originally had feathers, based on prayer totems, but the Creature Effects crew led by Nick Dudman interpreted those feathers as horns, modifying his features into those common in popular depictions of the devil.
Maul only had three lines in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Although Ray Park said the dialogue during production, the lines were re-dubbed by Peter Serafinowicz. The Phantom Menace was Serafinowicz's first film role, though he had acted on television since 1996.

Why doesn't Maul have a Sith name?
Maul actually was his Sith name. In the Rebels tv series, Maul says to another character that he once had a real name, but he has long since forgotten it. Palpatine took Maul from his mother and gave him his Sith name as an infant. His real name is lost to time.
As far as I know, there is no Canon date of birth for Maul, but in Legends, he was born in 54 BBY. In canon, Maul was killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine during the year 2 BBY. If we use the Legends year of birth, then Maul would have been 52 years old when he died.
Maul's skills, on the other hand, became stagnant as he spent the last few decades of his life keeping himself alive and plotting schemes. Given this, it makes sense Obi-Wan quickly defeated Maul in their final duel in Star Wars Rebels.
Sidious revealed to Maul that he did not intend to kill his former apprentice, as he still had use for Maul; it was Sidious' hope that Maul would lead the Sith to Mother Talzin, Maul's mother and the leader of the Nightsisters, so she could be eliminated as a potential threat to the eventual Sith rule of the galaxy.

Overall, Dooku was far more equipped to become a Sith Master than Maul was. Had he managed to overthrow Palpatine, Dooku would have been able to use his position, combat abilities, and dark side Force powers to take his place on the throne Palpatine had carved.
The two were able to free Maul after he had been interrogated by the Sith Lord Count Dooku, and together the three rendezvoused with more Death Watch forces on the moon of Zanbar. Maul took command of his forces once again, and assured them that the war they had longed for was at hand.
Darth Maul before the events of a new hope look for Obi Wan to kill him. Obi Wan however he manages to kill Maul by cutting him in two, and this time he can stay with him to make sure he is really dead.
Regardless, based on the season 7 of The Clone Wars, and the fact that Darth Maul was aware of Anakin Skywalker's future and his role as the Chosen One, it is very likely that Darth Maul indeed feared Darth Vader to some extent, and preferred to avoid a direct confrontation with him, at least, on his own.
That was in 3 BBY, thus meaning Maul was 51 years old when he first appeared in Star Wars Rebels season 2. His time on the show didn't last long, seeing as he was killed off - for the final time - in a duel with Obi-Wan on Tatooine in Star Wars Rebels season 3. He was 52 years old when he died in 2 BBY.
During the battle, Anakin, who had been known as the Sith Lord Darth Vader, was redeemed by Luke and brought balance to the Force. However, the redemption cost Anakin his life, having been mortally wounded by the Emperor, Darth Sidious, while killing his former Master.
Maul most likely knew Sidious' double role as Palpatine and Sidious when he served as Palpatine's apprentice. He definitely knew about Palpatine's goal of creating a galactic empire ruled by the Sith. Maul knows that Sidious is the Emperor.
Darth Vader defeats Darth Maul. The two Sith Lords engaged in a lightsaber duel, going through the volcano and onto a bridge situated over a river of lava, which collapsed, though they both survived and continued their battle.
