Morgoth, utterly defeated stood and watched. He fled into the deepest of his mines, but his feet were cut from under him, and he was cast down upon his face. He was bound with the chain Angainor, his Iron Crown was beaten into a collar for his neck, and he was thrust through the Door of Night into the Timeless.
His theft of the Silmarils and wars against Elves and Men encompassed much of the history of the late First Age. Eventually, Morgoth was bound in chains by the Valar and thrown into the Void, leaving the permanent damage his evils had done, and his former lieutenant Sauron, to trouble the world.
After Morgoth's ousting by the Valar, Sauron became the second Dark Lord and sought to conquer most of Arda through guileful trickery, with the Rings of Power or with overwhelming armies.
The Valar exile him permanently from the world, thrusting him through the Door of Night into the void, excluding him from Arda until the prophesied Dagor Dagorath, when he will meet his final destruction. His evil remains, however, and his will influences all living creatures.
Fingolfin, receiving false news, rode alone to Angband and challenged Morgoth to single combat. He wounded Morgoth several times, but grew weary and was killed by the immortal Vala. Fingolfin has inspired artists, musicians and video game designers to create depictions of his deeds.
It was said that Morgoth hated and feared the House of Fingolfin most among the Houses of the sons of Finwë, especially Fingolfin's son Turgon, as it was prophesied that his doom would come from the House of Turgon.
While Morgoth doesn't appear in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, he plays a significant role in The Silmarillion and Tolkien's other writings, and his reign of terror had a far bigger impact on Middle-earth history than Sauron's — as seen in Amazon's The Rings of Power series.
Envy: He hates how he cannot make life and is jealous of Eru's ability to create life which is why he creates Discord and is the prime motivation of Morgoth. If it isn't mine, then I will destroy it. Gluttony: He breaks his promise and betrays Ungoliant, so he can keep the Silmarils for himself.
Ëonwë herald of Manwë, one of the Lords of the Maiar and most likely the most powerful non-Vala being in Arda. For those who have read the Silmarillion, it seems that it were the Valar who defeated Morgoth.
Bloodlines are very important in Tolkien's stories, and it makes a lot of sense that Sauron would fear the great-grandson of the man who cut off his hand. Aragorn carried the blood of Numenor with him. His genetic connection to the heroes of the Second Age established him as a dangerous opponent of Sauron.
Morgoth's end came in the War of Wrath. The half-elf Eärendil (Elrond's father) led the Valar in the War of Wrath. During this battle, they seized Morgoth and chained him up in Angband. The Valar ejected Morgoth into the Void, an empty place where time did not exist.
By the time Elves awoke in the world, Sauron had become Melkor's lieutenant and was given command over the new stronghold of Angband. The Valar made war on Melkor and captured him, but Sauron escaped. He hid in Middle-earth, repaired Angband, and began breeding Orcs.
His most direct legacy would be that of his second-in-command, Sauron, who took up the mantle of Dark Lord following his master's fall. Sauron would command many of the same forces that Morgoth had created in his time. Morgoth was the bringer of evil and darkness onto Middle-earth.
Of course, Gandalf had already fallen prey to the Balrog of Morgoth during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Yet, this fight was surprisingly an even match, since the Balrog was once an angelic being as well, meaning that their level of power came close to that of a wizard.
6 Gandalf. As previously stated, Gandalf is a Maia and is therefore superior to Elves regarding power. Still, this isn't to say that an elf couldn't develop enough skill and power to defeat a Maia. As a bearer of one of the Three Elven Rings (Nenya), Galadriel would have an edge against Maiar like Saruman and Radagast.
While not appearing in the film series (most likely because he no longer existed in the world at the time of the said series because of his banishment to the Void in the War of Wrath in The Silmarillion), Morgoth's most powerful servants, such as Sauron, still thrive, and Morgoth was mentioned in The Lord of the Rings ...
Morgoth didn't create inanimate objects like rings of power, but he was the one that originally filled Middle-earth with evil. Using his power, Morgoth corrupted a group of Maia and turned them into demonic Balrogs. He also created Orcs by perverting Elves, and he made Trolls by tainting Ents.
Morgoth, the first to reign terror upon Middle-earth, was more powerful than Sauron and commanded an army of dragons and Balrogs. While both Morgoth and Sauron were cunning, Morgoth's rule and terror lasted longer and his corruption spread further, making him more formidable in the Lord of the Rings universe.
For that matter, the Valar didn't have the authority to remove another Ainur's power. If they had had that authority, they would have stripped Morgoth of his power, rather than going to war with him so many times.
What Morgoth Corrupted To Make Dragons. The most common theory is that dragons were corrupted versions of the Great Eagles of Middle-earth. It makes sense because the Eagles are regularly shown as the good counterparts to dragons and Fell Beasts.
From a technical sense, Sauron and the Balrogs were Maiar, not Valar. That meant that they were designed as lesser beings from the beginning of time. Thus, in their original forms, Morgoth would have easily defeated Sauron in a fight.
Vickers' comments imply that Sauron's intentions with Galadriel were primarily political in his dealings with the elves and that he was using her to elevate his power as a ruler over middle earth. The actor didn't seem to believe Sauron wanted to change at all, and that he had been manipulating her all along.
