Because of some of the content I wouldn't recommend the movie for younger children, but teens and upwards would get a kick out of the sweet romance. Otherwise, this is a great family movie for those of y'all who have older kids.
The plot is obviously similar to the movie Big and all the critics have already bothered to point that out. While 13 Going on 30 isn't as good or engaging as Big, it's still a decent film with a nice message. The movie works a lot better than it should because of Jennifer Garner.
However, the topics in this show should be seen by 11+ children, for it gives them a (for parents) safe glipmse of the teenyears that are ahead of them.
Garner makes the most of this humble, good-natured rom-com, propelling it from the minor leagues to the majors. 13 Going on 30, directed with a sweet touch by Gary Winick (Tadpole), is an immensely likable if unchallenging comedy.
Not a prude here - but almost every scene had a crass sexual reference or joke - beware for the younger kids who aren't ready for this. Further, the female roles are generally farcical caricatures and shallow stereotypes.
I am fairly free with what I let my daughter watch and recently rewatched this with her and couldn't believe the amount of direct sexual conversation, much less the innuendo. This should have been a hard pass until she is way older, even though I do love this movie.

Language is mild to PG-13. But is there a teen party where there is lots of drugs and passionate kissing in the background. There is also a scene where the main character Cher gets robbed at gunpoint. (***NO BLOOD OR VIOLENCE***) So in my opinion it is not for younger kids.
Gilmore is sexually promiscuous and generally abusive—verbally and physically. Happy Gilmore communicates the following messages: “Self-destructive and anti-social behavior is good for a laugh,” and “the jerk gets the girl.” Not a healthy model for young viewers.
To start, I know GG was a family show on WB, and the writers couldn't throw in an F-bomb if they tried. There was an occasional hell, damn, or maybe ass that was okay for TV and kept the cozy, pure feeling of the show we love.
