Fawcett Comics birthed the original Captain Marvel in the 1930s. Legal battles led to the shift from Captain Marvel to Shazam! and the birth of Marvel's own Captain Marvel series. The 21st century saw rebranding for both Captain Marvel and Shazam, who have now also become successful Hollywood heroes.
Who came first, DC's Captain Marvel or Marvel's Captain Marvel?
Because Captain Marvel is older then Marvel Comics. Captain Marvel wasn't even created by DC. He was created by Fawcett Comics, to compete with Superman, but DC sued Fawcett in 1953 claiming that he was a copy of Superman, what was worse for DC was that Captain Marvel sold better than Superman did.

Owing to trademark conflicts over other characters named "Captain Marvel" owned by Marvel Comics, DC has branded and marketed the character using the trademark Shazam! since his 1972 reintroduction.
But in Marvel Comics, Carol is only the latest in a long line of heroes to use the name. In fact, she's not the first, second, third, or even fourth Captain Marvel in the Marvel Universe - she's the seventh.
In the film, Danvers, Rambeau, and Kamala team up as "the Marvels" after they begin swapping places with each other every time they use their powers. Marvel Studios confirmed plans to make a sequel to Captain Marvel in July 2019.
A "Captain Marvel" sequel is in the works, with Brie Larson reprising her role as the titular hero. "WandaVision" star Teyonah Parris will return as Monica Rambeau in the film. "The Marvels" will be directed by Nia DaCosta and is currently set for release on November 10, 2023.
Shazam acknowledges that he is unsure if he is stronger than Black Adam, despite his confidence in his mortal form. Both Shazam and Black Adam possess the same strengths endowed by the Wizard and have never been able to triumph over each other.
In 1941, DC Comics (who were known back then as National Comics) sued Fawcett Comics for copyright infringement, claiming that Captain Marvel had been based on Superman. Of course, he kind of had, but the fact remained that Captain Marvel was also vastly different from the Man of Steel.
The key difference: Comic book Mar-Vell is a male while movie Mar-Vell is female. According to directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the gender swap happened “very late” into development. “That was one of the epiphanies in the writing that came fairly late in the process,” Boden recently told Entertainment Weekly.
Shazam was actually the original Captain Marvel. Though he is now a DC character, he didn't start off that way. In fact, Shazam has been around since 1940, when he first appeared in Whiz Comics #2, published by Fawcett Comics.
Since 1972, DC Comics has published Shazam! comics and while they are not allowed to use the name to sell the comics in the stories he was still allowed to be referred to as Captain Marvel, hence why series like Justice League Unlimited and Batman: Brave and the Bold were still calling him Captain Marvel.
Even though the law is on DC's side as far as being able to call him Captain Marvel, and even though DC still continues to use the Captain Marvel moniker here and there (like they've done as recently as 2021)… … they are still afraid of a lawsuit from Marvel Comics, so Mark Waid came up with a workaround for the name.
On their own, both these noble heroes are capable of beating incredible forces. But for all Shazam's power, he does not match Thor's experience in using the more arcane elements of his abilities.
The now-infamous mid-credits scene in 2022's Black Adam famously reintroduced Henry Cavill's Superman as a force capable of stopping the antihero, teeing up a showdown that will now never happen.
Seeing as he would have lost against Thanos without the upgrade of his new weapons, it's clear who the victor would be in a confrontation between the Mad Titan and Adam. A battle between the god-tier Thanos and Black Adam would be insane, but in the end, Thanos would walk away victorious.

Ultimately, pure strength and speed will win the fight of pantheons, with the gods-given power of Black Adam simply being too much for Thor. Black Adam has speed on the level of a Kryptonian or even the DCU's version of The Flash, which is simply too much for Asgard's former prince.
The Dwayne Johnson-led film was released in October 2022 to middling critical reception. The overblown action sequences, lack of a tight script, thin story, and poor character development meant that Black Adam was a disappointment for those excited to see the so-called shift in the hierarchy of the DCEU's power.
