The demon is quite creepy and does scare the viewer, just like the ominous presence of the doll. But Annabelle didn't innovate as The Conjuring did regarding atmosphere and scares. Is Conjuring 1 or 3 scarier?
Now, the third Conjuring covers the pair's involvement in the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, prompting some to wonder whether it is as scary as the original. Sadly, while The Conjuring 3 does feature some undeniably effective jump scares, it is not as creepy as the original.
It's all pretty terrifying. But on the upside, other than the scary/gory stuff, there's not too much other iffy content of note -- no sex, strong language, alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs. Though the central couple is married and affectionate, they're very rarely physical onscreen (not much beyond a hug or a kiss).

And Annabelle doll is actually based on a real toy, and according to the New Haven Register, Lorraine Warren shared the story in 2014 at Lauralton Hall after the first movie came out. She said that she had the doll at her Occult Museum at her house in Monroe, Connecticut.

The fact that it can also suddenly disappear from view makes it that much scarier. Annabelle definitely gives us chills, but her telekinetic tricks and demonic form are pretty standard fare. Chucky has cornered the market in the tiny maniacal assassin trope, and wins this one for being one of a kind.

Plenty of blood seen in the form of severed body parts, pools of blood, and a brief image of blood flowing down stairs. A character is buried alive but survives.

Though the film has the solid production design, cinematography and score that one can typically expect from The Conjuring Universe, the story and its characters are dull, lifeless, and generic. Content collapsed. “Annabelle” often teases us with what it potentially could have been.
I must admit that I'm quite shocked but I thought the film was much better and much creepier than the first film. Director James Wan is really becoming an expert at these types of films and this here is certainly among the best that has been made.
In the movie, the demon conduiting the doll is Malthus(The Ram demon). It always had been inhabitating inside the Annabelle doll and is the same demon who possessed Janice(later identified as Annabelle Higgins) in Annabelle:Creation(2017). This demon,Malthus, has been clearly revealed in Annabelle Comes Home(2019).
The recommended viewing order begins with The Conjuring movies, followed by the Annabelle trilogy, The Curse of La Llorona, The Nun and its sequel, and finally the third Conjuring movie. This order provides the most enjoyable and comprehensive experience.

As a horror it packs in some real scares, but there is so much more to it, it has tension, a story, and some real intrigue, possibly because of the fact that it was inspired by real life events.
The problem here is that it's not very well plotted and the acting is B grade, to say the least. It's a movie desperately in search of a **** an original script. Annabelle is a failed horror movie that has jump scares a terrible plot and terrible acting.
The only black woman in the whole movie, the only character of colour at all, plunges to her death in a selfless saintly act to save an all-American Christian white family, and then is never mentioned after.
