In May 2016, DC Comics launched a refreshed comic book universe, calling the initiative DC Rebirth. The publication of DC Universe Rebirth #1 marked the end of DC's New 52, which controversially rebooted the DCU from 2011 to 2016.

If you have to choose one or the other, go with Rebirth. You can always check out the New 52 stories later if you're curious, but the Rebirth comics are generally better, and they offer their own convenient jumping-on points.
It is a continuation of the New 52 but still a great starting point. While they are connected, you won't have to read much of New 52 to understand rebirth. Other than that, Rebirth is undoubtedly and easily the better starting point compared to the New 52.
There were a number of retcons in the New 52 that were very poorly received and went down in history as some of the worst changes made to the DC universe.
