Cheeta has usually been characterized as male, but sometimes as female, and has been portrayed by chimpanzees of both sexes. While the character of Cheeta is inextricably associated in the public mind with Tarzan, no chimpanzees appear in the original Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs that inspired the films.
The late Hollywood animal trainer Tony Gentry put it in his will that when he died, his best friend, Jiggs, who he lived with and took care of for decades, was to be euthanized. Jiggs was better known to the public as Cheeta, Johnny Weissmuller's comic sidekick in the Tarzan films of the 1930s and 40s.
The chimpanzee died Saturday after suffering kidney failure the week before, the sanctuary foundation said on the site. He was roughly 80 years old, Debbie Cobb, the sanctuary's outreach director, told CNN affiliate WFLA.

Tarzan grew curious of the newcomers as he never seen other humans before due to being raised by gorillas all his life. Tarzan then instantly took a liking to Jane and her father while watching Jane share a loving embrace with her father upon discovering gorillas did family groups together.
While Burroughs never said exactly where Tarzan was set, Cameroon's sandy beaches, imposing jungle and ape sanctuaries seem like a good bet – so much so that the West African country was chosen as the setting for the 1984 film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes.
