Maya Lopez is the adopted daughter of the supervillain Kingpin. She is also a supporting character of the superhero Matt Murdock / Daredevil. The character has been a member of the Avengers and the New Avengers at various points in her history.
At age nine, Maya's gangster father works with his partner in crime, Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin, who eventually kills him. Fisk becomes her guardian. Hoping to one day use her talents, Fisk subtly manipulates her into learning fighting skills as well as the performance arts, which she excels in both.

Who kills Echo's dad?
In the penultimate episode of Hawkeye, Maya and the Ronin fight at the auto shop where her father was killed, and as he almost defeats her, Clint takes off the mask to reveal that he's her father's killer.
According to Daphnis, Echo was raised among the Nymphæ because her mother was a nymph. Her father, however, was merely a man and hence Echo was not herself a nymph but mortal. Echo spent her days dancing with the Nymphæ and singing with the Muses who taught her all manner of musical instruments.
Though Maya has every reason to hate Fisk, given how he killed her father and threatened to kill the rest of her family, Maya defeats Fisk with a surprising method.

In the comics, after Wilson Fisk killed Maya's father, William, the Kingpin adopted her. He had her trained as his assassin and was later sent to prove her skillset against Daredevil. She kept a white hand printed on her face, nodding to the bloody hand print her father left behind when he died.
Her grandma Chula (Tantoo Cardinal) blamed this calamity on Echo's criminal dad (Zahn McClarnon), who in Hawkeye was slain by the Avenger, thus nominally pitting Echo against him.
The only real standout being Vincent D'Onofrio's excellent portrayal of Kingpin, but even that is tarnished by the writing and a limp wiltering flower of an ending. Echo also suffered from bad editing with the pacing and storyline feeling like they were all over the place.
They can make Echo stand out and at the same time dive further into her roots and who she is. As for her name: yes, in the comics, it derived from the fact that she could "echo" other people's powers. In the series, it derives from the fact that she can "echo" her ancestor's powers.

Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book III, relates that Echo offended the goddess Hera by keeping her in conversation, thus preventing her from spying on one of Zeus' amours. To punish Echo, Hera deprived her of speech, except for the ability to repeat the last words of another.
