Ghostface (alternatively stylized as Ghost Face or GhostFace) is a fictional identity that is adopted by the primary antagonists of the Scream franchise. The figure was originally created by Kevin Williamson, and is primarily mute in person but voiced over the phone by Roger L.
But that fear quickly turned into inspiration. Williamson used the Gainesville Ripper and his love for horror as inspiration for a killer who climbs through windows and terrorizes a small-knit town. Scream took place in a California town but there were a few parallels to the Ripper and Ghostface.
In total, Rolling confessed to killing eight people. He was sentenced to death for the five Gainesville murders in 1994. He was executed by lethal injection in 2006. His killing spree inspired screenwriter Kevin Williamson to pen the script of the famous 1996 slasher film Scream.
Ghostface was not a supernatural demon like Freddy Krueger or an unkillable bogeyman like Michael Myers — he was just a guy (or really, two guys) in a costume. Scream was a slasher, but it was also a whodunit.
