Gimli is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, appearing in The Lord of the Rings. A dwarf warrior, he is the son of Glóin, a member of Thorin's company in Tolkien's earlier book The Hobbit. He represents the race of Dwarves as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
Early life. Born in TA 2879, Gimli was the son of Glóin and a nephew of Óin, both former companions of Bilbo Baggins. He was a descendant of Durin the Deathless, father of the first house of the Dwarven people. Gimli was descended from, but was not a member of the royal line.
Though Gimli has no children, he is not the last Dwarf of Middle-earth. After the fall of Sauron, his people continued to thrive in the Lonely Mountain. Gimli made his home in Rohan, in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and many of his kinsfolk came with him.
Gimli is the son of Glóin who is introduced in The Hobbit as a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, also being one of his four third cousins. Thorin himself is a direct descendant of Durin I, even becoming the King of Durin's Folk in his lifetime.
In Aglarond, it is assumed, he lived on until he was old, and in Fo. A. 120 he sailed with Legolas his friend across Belegaer to Valinor, becoming the first and only Dwarf to do so.
Though Gimli's life story doesn't mention any children, there are tons of other dwarves in the world of Middle-earth. Gimli is certainly important among his people, but he wasn't the first, and he won't be the last.
Men were never allowed to enter the Undying Lands after the fall of Numenor and any attempts to reach the lands would result in failure or disaster. Aragorn, despite his heroic deeds, likely wouldn't have accepted an invitation to ensure his duties as king.
Thrain I, Thrain II, and Thror are dwarves who live during the Third Age of the Sun and belong to the race of Durin. Durin's Line is one of seven original dwarf genealogies, and it's the main surviving Line after the end of the First Age. By the Third Age, even this family tree has shrunk in size.

According to one theory (via Stack Exchange), Gimli did not know about the fall of Moria in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie due, effectively, to poor communication.
Thorin I (Third Age 2035 – 2289, died aged 254) was the King of Durin's Folk for 99 years, succeeding his father, Thráin I, on his death in T.A. 2190. Thorin was the heir of Durin the Deathless being the great-grandson of Durin VI.
In TA 2941, Gimli was prevented from traveling with his father on the Quest of Erebor because Thorin and Company thought he was too young, though Gimli, being in his sixties, considered himself ripe for adventure and was disappointed to be left behind.
Gimli didn't know about Moria's fate because there had been no communication between Erebor and Moria for 25 years, and the Dwarves were hopeful and did not want to accept failure until there was certain news.
During The Hobbit, Legolas' character is much more troubled and headstrong. He's focused on hunting with the guard and spending time with Tauriel. However, there is one thing his younger self was better at – conversation. He did spend all that time with his crush and debating his father, after all.
Character. Although he lived among them, Legolas was not fully of the Silvan Elves. As a son of the Elven-king Thranduil, who had originally come from Doriath, Legolas was at least half Sindar; his mother's identity is completely unknown.
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
After the death of Thorin in the Battle of Five Armies, Dain becomes King under the Mountain. He redeems the Arkenstone from Bard with a fourteenth of the treasure, which is used to re-establish Dale. Over the next three years, Bard rebuilds the city of Dale and becomes its ruler. The city begins to prosper again.

Arwen reciprocated Aragorn's love, and on the mound of Cerin Amroth they committed themselves to marrying each other. In making that choice, Arwen gave up the Elvish immortality available to her as a daughter of Elrond, and agreed to remain in Middle-earth instead of travelling to the Undying Lands.
The Lord of the Rings films showed Arwen (Liv Tyler) dying due to her connection to the One Ring. The closer Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) get to Mount Doom, the closer she gets to death.
Fortunately, Aragorn avoids the corruption of the Ring in the only way possible… by refusing to take it in the first place. He doesn't crave power, except what is his by right, and he doesn't fear death. He also knows what happens to those who accept Sauron's gifts.
