When Rand arrives home in Kingston Falls he gives the mogwai to his son Billy (Zach Galligan) as a Christmas gift, giving it the rather rubbish name Gizmo, almost certainly in reference to his series of crap inventions.
Gremlins starts off with Randall Peltzer venturing into Chinatown to find a Christmas gift for his son Billy. He ends up with Gizmo, the super-cute Mogwai which reinforces the message that a pet is for life - not just for Christmas.
The first half sets the stage for the mayhem to come as a boy receives a Mogwai (an unusual creature) as an early Christmas present. Eventually, the Mogwai spawns a hoard of maniacal Gremlins that terrorize the boy's town.
It's better to watch it around Halloween actually, because it has more to do with literal monsters than it does Christmas. That said, while many people call this movie a horror comedy, it's not that scary. The gremlins are hysterical; they do ridiculous things, die hilarious deaths, and kill in absurd ways.
The official genre for Gremlins is horror-comedy, but most of the film takes place on Christmas Eve. While that alone does not make it a Christmas movie, it puts this film in the running.

Is Gizmo a Christmas movie?
Not only is Gremlins definitely a Christmas film; it's a holiday classic we can re-watch year after year—not only, but perhaps especially, at Christmastime.
This is because he is a Minority Mogwai, a mogwai that is kind and nice. The Gizmo puppet used in the first film was not used in the second film, however the much cuter Gizmo puppet used in Gremlins 2: The New Batch was featured on the DVD cover of Gremlins.
After a period of time, the mogwai has now transformed into a scaly gremlin, which hatches from the cocoon. What happens with the cocoon is unknown, but it is possible that the hatched cocoon stays where it is like with insects that hatch from cocoons.
As the goddess of creation, Nuwa has the ability to restore gremlins to their Mogwai form, which she does multiple times during Secrets of the Mogwai's first season.

Gizmo (also referred to as "Giz") is the protagonist in Gremlins movie franchise and Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Gizmo is an adorable, very kind Mogwai who is part of Billy Peltzer's life. Originally owned by Sam Wing, Gizmo lives with Billy and Kate Peltzer in New York.
One report describes Gremlins as "in general too disturbing for children and [playing] far too highly with childish fears and insecurities while having fun with the adults". The gremlins themselves, once fed and watered, are nasty things to look at and the final 'melty' sequence is a gruesome sight.

Stripe was very hostile to Gizmo the Mogwai. His dislike for Gizmo may have been because he did not want the other Mogwai to refer to Gizmo as their leader because they were born from him. Stripe has the overall mind of a gangster when it comes to his choices of weaponry such as handguns and machine guns.
Fans have always been curious where the cute fuzzball came from. Fortunately, the Max Original series revealed he originated in a region in China known as the Valley of Jade. While Gizmo the fearless warrior's tribe was shown (as well has how he ended up among mankind), it was never revealed how he was actually made.
