In the 1992 adaptation of Aladdin, where he is voiced by Jonathan Freeman, Jafar is the grand vizier of Agrabah, the Sultan's most trusted advisor. He is also an evil and sinister sorcerer who strongly dislikes being second best.
He manipulates the Sultan, believes that other lives besides his own are worthless, and creates quite a ruckus when he finally becomes an all-powerful sorcerer.

When Jafar hypnotized her father so he could marry Jasmine and become sultan, Jasmine was horrified and disgusted that she immediately refused to marry him. When Aladdin revealed that Jafar was controlling the Sultan through his magic snake staff, Jasmine's hatred grew stronger for what he was doing to her father.
