Jake – as Toruk Makto; rider of the Last Shadow – rallies over 15 clans to his aid, and with Neytiri at his side, he leads the clans against the Sky People and successfully defeats the human invaders.
By learning how to control and ride a Toruk, Jake Sully rightfully earns the title "Toruk Makto" and regains the trust and respect of the Na'vi after they become skeptical about his motives.
After successfully defeating the RDA in the Assault on the Tree of Souls, all humans, with the exception of a few, were banished from Pandora and were sent back to their dying planet. Jake released his toruk, as Toruk Makto was no longer needed.
The Na'vi who accomplishes this is given the title Toruk Makto or “Rider of the Last Shadow.” Only someone with a pure soul can ride a toruk; some brave but foolish Na'vi have tried to link and perished. It is said that whenever the Na'vi face seemingly insurmountable odds, a Toruk Makto will appear.
Toruk was chasing both Neytiri and Jake. When they split up, Toruk probably chose to go after Jake because he was obviously the more inexperienced flyer and hence would be easier to catch. Neytiri was literally on the other side of them, and at some points closer to Toruk than Jake was.
In order to gain back the trust of the Omaticaya, Jake sought out a legendary predator, Toruk, both feared and revered in Na'vi culture. Jake became the sixth Na'vi to successfully ride one of the creatures and, as a result, was given the title of Toruk Makto.

Jake shows very little compassion towards Lo'ak due to his rebellious ways and seems more concerned about Lo'ak's failures instead of his earnest attempts to help. At one point, Jake bluntly tells Lo'ak that he has brought shame onto their family.
