Katniss is alone, lost in her grief. The reality hits her, hard, all over again. Later, after a hunt, Katniss arrives home to see Peeta has finally returned from the Capitol and is planting primrose flowers in the garden to honor Prim. Katniss embraces him, smiling for the first time since Prim's death.
What happened to Katniss at the end of Mockingjay?
Though still suffering nightmares from the entire ordeal, they comfort each other. Twenty years later, Katniss and Peeta are married and have two children. Under Paylor's administration, the Hunger Games are abolished with the arenas replaced by memorials.
Mockingjay the book ends happily, I guess you could say. Katniss isn't dead, Peeta isn't dead. They're together, they have kids. How's this for happy: "My children, who don't know they play on a graveyard." How's this for happy: "One day I'll have to explain about my nightmares.
Why does Gale leave Katniss at the end of Mockingjay?
In the Mockingjay movie, Katniss confronts Gale about his role in Prim's death, which he struggles to come to terms with. Katniss, unable to look at him the same way, lets him walk away without a word and eventually ended up living with Peeta.
Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.

In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Peeta decides, though, that he will go out on his own to act as a diversion in case Katniss and the others need it. Gale gives Peeta his nightlock pill in case Peeta's captured. They leave early in the morning, bundled up and styled by Tigris. Cressida and Pollux go first, leading the way to the City Circle.
Devastated and left mentally and emotionally stranded , Johanna spent the next few years in isolation, wallowing in her sorrow and trauma. During this period of time, she served as a mentor for the tributes reaped in her district.

Mags Flanagan became the first victor from District 4, living off of nuts and her survival skills by creating fishhooks.
