Although Disney creators used their creative license in the fictionalized story of Moana, with the character of Maui, they did highlight some actual Polynesian origin myths.
The overarching message of Moana is, truly, that the worst thing to happen to you doesn't have to define you. Moana's father lives in fear due to a tragic past; Maui feels as though he is missing a critical part of himself without his hook; Te Fiti turns into a literal monster after she is attacked.
The main focus of spiritual devotion in Moana is the islanders, and particularly Moana's, faith in Te Fiti. This island goddess is the highest being, and even another god, Maui bows to her. This strengthens the fact that life revolves around nature, and faith in nature roots the spirit.
The portrayal of Polynesian culture in Moana has been praised for its authenticity and attention to detail. The filmmakers worked closely with cultural advisors and experts to ensure that the film accurately represented Polynesian traditions and values.

But that's not to say that there aren't some similarities between Disney's Moana and wider beliefs – particularly Polynesian beliefs. One key example is the character, Maui. He's a heroic figure that can be found throughout many Polynesian myths, legends and stories.
