After Arlo fails to trap and kill the creature, Henry takes Arlo up to a ravine, but after a storm ensues, they begin to turn back, until a rushing rapid comes toward the two. Henry manages to save Arlo before he is swept away but he is killed by the rapid. He is hit by a rolling wave and is never seen again.
(In the revised script, Arlo's father dies in a rainstorm, leaving Arlo lost in the wilderness with Spot.) As a result, Arlo would deal “with themes that are a little darker than usual,” Sohn told The Hollywood Reporter. “That only helps depict what a kid goes through when they're maturing.”

It was also regrettable that The Good Dinosaur followed the hugely successful release of Inside Out. As beautifully detailed as the scenery is in the film, it doesn't make up for its lack of substance. Its minimalistic story and underdeveloped characters meant that it made Pixar's first flop.
I mean, he got that *SPOILER ALERT* Arlo's dad dies (sad) and Spot becomes his best friend (happy) with whom he has great adventures (funny, but sometimes scary, too) and he must say goodbye to him in the end (sad) - he got all that, it just didn't seem to move him all that much.
But no we don't get to see the 2 of them reunited in the end and this really made me sad. after their depressing goodbye we quickly go back to the farm and Arlo's reunited with his family, and seconds after that it's all about Arlo earning his mark.
After young apotosauras Arlo's father getting washed away by a flood. He blames a cave kid named Spot for killing him. Spot suddenly knocks Arlo into the river and Arlo gets washed away and gets lost in the woods.
In the film, Arlo gets caught in a current and carried down a long river away from his family and is trying to get home. (Sad.) He realizes he has to follow the river to walk back home and along the way befriends Spot, who is something of an orphan and looking for a companion. (More sad.)
However, after Arlo trips on a rock and injures his leg, Henry, feeling regretful for how mad he was at Arlo and realizing what his obsession with catching the critter led to, decides to turn back just as a flash flood occurs and a massive rapid appears, but Henry only manages to save Arlo before he is swept away and ...
The overall theme throughout the movie is love for family: despite Arlo's early struggles, he loves his family and is strongly motivated by his desire to get back to them when they are separated. Arlo and Spot also demonstrate real friendship throughout the movie.
