My husband and I usually like horror movies, but I would advise any parents to keep kids under 18 from watching this . ( unless you rent it later and take time to pause and explain the damaging content to them).
Mutilated and severed body parts are discovered, and frequent stabbings and shootings result in bloody injuries. A person falls from a height and hits their head, resulting in some brief gory detail. Scenes of violence include frenzied stabbings with elements of sadism and brutality, often resulting in bloody detail.
NOT for kids under 18 - We had to walk out due to psychologically disturbing content! 😱 We were shocked by the disturbingly demented content and graphic psychologically damaging descriptions that were depicted in first 20 minutes of this movie. Nothing like the prior Scream movies!
But don't be lulled by the star power and satire: The violence here is brutal, intense, and gory. Though the thrilling pace, high school drama, and steady jolts will likely keep young audiences watching, this movie is best for older teens and adults.
And yes, the famous killer Ghostface (who is often played by a different actor each time) will return to cause havoc on Sydney and her friends, as well as the newcomers to this film. “Scream” will be bloody and horrific. It's a rated-R film that you shouldn't bring your children to.
Very uncomfortable to watch. Many scenes of people being stabbed frantically and repeatedly and finally slashed across the chest or neck leaving a lot of blood on the body and the surrounding area, a few gunshots leaving some bloody wounds, a few scenes from slasher movies, news reports of murder and carnage.
If your child is already anxious or easily scared, their temperament points toward waiting until they're older. Based on reviews by critics, parents, and even tweens and teens themselves, the consensus with the Scream franchise seems to be that your kid should be older than preteen to watch.
However, as with every movie, it isn't perfect. The pacing of the film seemed off as some scenes dragged on a little too long and you could tell this is the longest movie in the franchise. As well as this, because of the shift in tone, this is probably the least funniest and meta Scream movie yet.
Overall, I'd give the movie a 3/5, and kids ages 12 and up should be able to handle it. My rating: Rated R for strong horror violence, disturbing images, strong language and some crude/sexual humor.

First, there is a ton of violence. Teens/tweens are brutally killed, their bones snapped, eyes gouged out, eaten by monsters etc. There is a terrifying possession scene is season two and there is an exorcism scene that is very scary. In season four, a group of younger kids are killed in a horrific massacre.
25 "f" words (1 used sexually), 26 "s" words, 10 "ass" words, 6 damns, 2 slang terms for breasts (the "t" word), 2 hells, and 6 uses each of "Oh my God" and "Jesus," 4 uses of "God damn," 2 uses each of "Oh God," "Jesus Christ," and "God" and 1 use each of "My God" and "For Christ's sake" as exclamations.
Very bloody and disturbing. There are many scenes where the killer attacks his victims, but he is also hit with fists, knees and feet as the victims defend themselves. Severe. Many other murder or attack victims are somewhat to extremely bloody and by the end nearly everyone is covered in their or someone else's blood.
The movie is still plenty R-rated, but very, very much toned down from, say, the original. Instead it's more character and story-driven, which may not be the first two things you think of when you think of the "Scream" franchise, but it is.
