Princess Sofia was reported to be Walt Disney's very first Latina princess. Now, after a series of criticisms over whether the character is "Hispanic enough," Disney claims that Sofia was never supposed to be Latina in the first place.
Kanter met with Alex Nogales, the president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, about the character. "[Kanter] shared that 'Sofia the First' is in fact not a Latina character and that the producer of the television program misspoke," Nogales wrote on NHMC's Facebook page.
Craig Gerber, co-executive producer/writer on the project says, “Princess Sofia is a mixed-heritage princess in a fairytale world. Her mother is originally from an enchanted kingdom inspired by Spain (Galdiz) and her birth father hailed from an enchanted kingdom inspired by Scandinavia.”
