Whilst the character is entirely fictional, it's interesting to note that the name Tamatoa actually means “trophy” in the Maori language. This is very apt because Tamatoa is all about collecting treasure and souvenirs from the people he has defeated.
Although Moana is from the fictional island Motunui some 3,000 years ago, the story and culture of Moana is based on the very real heritage and history of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. Moana's father, Chief Tui, may have been chosen by the ocean before her to bring the Heart of Te Fiti to Maui, indicating a family history of protecting the world. Chief Tui recognizes the Heart of Te Fiti when Moana shows it to him, suggesting that he has seen it before and has a fear associated with it.

He is quite monstrous in both size and attitude, one of his most well-known traits being his sadistic, heartless and unpleasant habit of eating anyone around him, be they humans, sea creatures, or even gods — he even admitted to eating his own grandmother.
Tamatoa is a giant blue crab with yellow towards the tip of his claws. He now has 9 legs (used to have 10, but his leg was ripped off by Maui). He has gold and treasure on his shell and was the stealer of Maui's fish hook, which he placed in the center of his shiny treasure.
Even though Tamatoa is able to overpower Maui, he is no match for the strong-willed and clever teen, Moana, who tricks the crab into relinquishing the magical hook.
Moana's home island, Motunui, is fictional, but the production team drew a map of Moana's journey (which can be found in the book The Art of Moana) that places Motunui east of Tonga, near the real-world location of Niue. Te Fiti's island was based on Tahiti.
Physical appearance. Te Fiti, as well as her Te Kā aspect, is an enormous embodiment of the earth, but her appearance differs between the two forms. The colossal Te Fiti takes the form of a feminine figure with a human face not unlike Moana's.

In the first film, Moana is around 16 years old when she sets out on a journey from her island of Motunui to find Maui and force him to restore the heart of Te Fiti. That would make her about 19 or 20 in the new movie.

Demigods can endure various punishment: such as falls from great heights, magical projections, and even a direct blow from supernatural beings with only minimal injury. But they are not invulnerable.
