In the books, the apes of Tarzan's adoptive tribe are absolutely not gorillas. Burroughs seemed to consider their species as more human, a kind of "missing link" between animals and humans.
There were two words in Tarzan's ape-lexicon that distinguished between the two different species. The apes were called the Mangani, while gorillas were referred to as Bolgani. Tarzan was a Tarmangani–a white ape.

Kerchak and Kala's baby is a minor character in Disney's 1999 animated feature film, Tarzan. He was the son of Kerchak and Kala. He first appears during the song "Two Worlds" and the beginning of the film, where he is seen crawling from his mother and onto Kerchak's arms.

In theory this could be an ethnic name but, both in England and northwest Europe, it is generally a nickname for a man with black hair and a swarthy complexion or a cruel, rowdy, or unruly man.
