To create a claustrophobic feeling, Shyamalan employed several filming techniques from Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950) and Ran (1985). As a result, Old was mostly filmed in a single location, the Playa El Valle beach located between two mountains on the north coast of Santa Bárbara de Samaná.
Playa El Valle is one of the most stunning beaches in the Dominican Republic. Located in Samana, this secluded beach offers guests a piece of paradise, with its crystal-clear waters and white sand.
It was filmed on the Thai island of Ko Phi Phi Le. The film was released on 11 February 2000, by 20th Century Fox. It was a moderate box office success, grossing $144 million against a $50 million budget, but received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.
What happened to Trent and Maddox in Old? This being an M Night Shyamalan film, there is still one twist to come: it turns out that Trent and Maddox did escape after all, and not only that, they've been able to inform the authorities of the beach and the sinister way it had been used.

Later in the movie her calcium deficiency gets so bad that her joints and bones begin to twist and crack leaving a morbid looking Chrystal to die.
In M. Night Shyamalan's Old, there are three intersecting mysteries. The first mystery is why is a specific beach is causing people who inhabit it to age at a highly accelerated rate. The second mystery is why do people blackout and end up back on the beach whenever they try to leave.
The coral, for reasons unexplained, counteracted the effects of the cove's rocks. Once Maddox and Trent were able to swim through the coral, they were free. The damage to their lives, however, had already been done and couldn't be reversed.
After discovering a washed-up dead body, it becomes clear that no one can leave the beach. If they try to go back the way they came, they get a black-out-inducing pressure head and are forced to turn back. Then, suddenly, the children are no longer children, but teenagers.

Old is a movie about a husband and a wife — a father and a mother — realizing that their squabbles are not as important as their love's product: their kids. Only when they face their end and witness their children grow rapidly into adults do they recognize the wonder they've made as a couple.

But at the end of the movie, when Trent and Maddox rope a police officer into investigating, he discovers that everyone they're naming is a missing person.
Who Dies in Old? In short: everyone except Trent and Maddox, the now grown children of the family we begin our journey with. But characters die in different ways and that's significant. Old is thematically MASSIVE.
Importantly, each family has at least one person with a pre-existing condition. Think multiple sclerosis, hypocalcemia, blood clotting disorder, mental illness, and epilepsy, for starters. Key to the storyline too is that no one can leave this oceanfront resort.
The now adult Trent and Maddox, the only two survivors by the movie's end, eventually escape from the beach thanks to a clue from Idlib, who tells them to swim through the (non-magnetized?) coral reefs.
Sadly, after being delivered, the baby is only alive for a less than a minute after their birth, crying and then quickly falling silent and still, passing away in Patricia's arms.
Hypocalcemia. Charles' wife and Kara's mother, Chrystal, was a young woman who was obsessed with vanity, which is partially revealed to be due to her insecurity of how her body could become changed due to her calcium deficiency disease.
