Broken Arrow is a 1950 American Western film directed by Delmer Daves and starring James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget. The film is based on historical figures, but fictionalizes their story in dramatized form.
He also meets and begins to fall in love with a young Apache woman named Sonseeahray (Debra Paget, a character created for the film). The rest of the film follows Jeffords attempt, along with General Howard (another actual historical figure, played by Basil Ruysdael) to negotiate a lasting peace with Cochise.
Some filming took place in and around the mountain areas of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Kane County, Utah. The lake scene with Hale and Carmichael was filmed at Lake Powell. The desert sequences were shot in the Mojave Desert near Barstow, California, and in Coconino County near Page, Arizona.
In the Vietnam War, Broken Arrow was a flagword to indicate that a ground element was facing an imminent threat of being overrun. It gave them first priority for all air support missions within range.

After the peace treaty, Cochise retired to the short-lived Chiricahua Reservation (1872–1876), with his friend Jeffords as agent. He died of natural causes (probably abdominal cancer) in 1874, and was buried in the rocks above one of his favorite camps in Arizona's Dragoon Mountains, now called the Cochise Stronghold.
The new city of Broken Arrow came into existence in 1902, named for the Muscogee settlement in its midst. The town was Broken Arrow, Indian Territory for five years until statehood in 1907.
