Iconic children's franchise Thomas the Tank Engine recently welcomed an autistic character, Bruno the Brake Car, to its popular cartoon series “Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go.”
The straightforward narratives and distinct facial expressions of Thomas the Tank Engine characters have endeared them to autistic children, as highlighted by a study conducted by the U.K. National Autistic Society.
Bruno is also autistic; as a result, he is detail-oriented and likes routine. Bruno in particular likes schedules and timetables and memorizes where all the tracks on the Island lead. For this reason, he is often entrusted with guiding more rambunctious engines such as Diesel and Kana.
Auditory Sensitivity and Rhythmic Sounds: Trains produce rhythmic sounds, such as the chugging of the engine and the clickety-clack of the wheels on the tracks. These repetitive and predictable sounds can provide a sense of comfort and may help autistic individuals regulate their sensory experiences.
