She is able to put Marlin first despite his insensitivity to her feelings because she genuinely cares about helping, just as a hero would. Dory's positive outlook on life and trust in those around her is the only thing that got the two of them through the journey to find Nemo.
There, they find Nemo, apparently dead (Nemo was actually faking it in an attempt to escape). Saddened, Marlin leaves for home, leaving Dory behind despite her claims that her memory is better with him.
Nemo is a young clownfish who's the only son of Marlin. Nemo and Marlin were the sole survivors after a barracuda attack that caused Marlin's partner, Coral, and their other 400 fish eggs to perish.

The protagonist, Nemo, displays a small, or "deformed," fin that is a congenital result of a fatal attack on his mother and sibling eggs—a corporeal characteristic that the story surrounds, yet does not drown in.
