Suzume's romantic threads are subtler, and left more up to the audience's interpretation. But Shinkai's refusal to spell out every step of their connection makes it feel like a more mature relationship, one where the two parties have more of an idea about who they are as people, and what they've done for each other.
Like a natural disaster looming over the characters, a romance that turns very dramatic in the second half. The romance in this movie actually felt a lot more natural than it did in Weathering with You. But the problem is that just like Your Name, Shinkai makes these romances take a very dramatic turn.
Interestingly, when the first keystone, a white cat, turns Souta into a chair, Suzume's quest becomes more complicated. While her love for Souta grows as she realizes how selfless he is, their romance feels quite run-of-the-mill.

Fans of Daijin think that he simply liked the protagonist and wanted to spend time with her. It's likely that Daijin just doesn't know or care about what's just in terms of human morality because he's a supernatural being. He might not see his actions as all that different from a typical cat annoying its owner.
Suzume 2 probably isn't coming out, because as mentioned above, the need for a sequel has been eliminated since director Makoto Shinkai wrapped up the storyline in the film itself. The official synopsis for Suzume reads: “Suzume, 17, lost her mother as a little girl.
Sōta inspires Suzume to live, but not for him, and not for love. He inspires her to live because he wants to live, which makes her realize she's worth a life as well. He changes her for the better by inspiring her, without actually being the sole reason she changes.

Suzume's lead characters, Suzume and Souta, also have a discernible age difference. Suzume is 17, and Souta is 21, which is less extreme than in Shinkai's past films, but it's still something that's been debated within Shinkai's fandom.

The story, by writer-director Makoto Shinkai ('Your Name') is complicated, but compelling. The main characters are well developed. For my money, this is the best animated film of 2023 (2022 in Japan). Suzume is not only one of the best films of 2023 it is one of the greatest animation films of all time.
We later learn that Suzume went there once as a little girl (after the devastating tsunami that killed her mom), which is why she can see it and its worm-like entity. There are also two cat-creatures that we find out are small gods assigned with keeping that alternate dimension and its contents in check.
The Japanese auteur, known for global box-office hits such as Your Name, leaves his signature style intact as he addresses the difficulty of accepting what is beyond human understanding.
