Was there supposed to be a sequel to Blade Runner 2049?
Blade Runner, the iconic science fiction film, is set to expand its universe with a new sequel series titled Blade Runner 2099. This series, set fifty years after Blade Runner 2049, promises to delve deeper into the dystopian world first introduced by Ridley Scott in 1982.
Much like the original, Blade Runner 2049 became a cult hit but failed to thrive financially due to pacing issues, murky stakes and zero fun factor. Ridley Scott followed up the tremendous success of his science fiction horror film Alien with his cyber-noir thriller Blade Runner.
Can I understand Blade Runner 2049 without watching the first?
The story continues from the original, but stands completely on it's own, it tells a new story that directly interlink with the original, but without trying to be a copy, it's a natural continuation in the same universe. You don't have to see the original Blade Runner first, though i do recommend it, see the final cut.
The acclaimed filmmaker had to step down from the Blade Runner sequel in 2017 due to a scheduling conflict with the Prometheus follow-up, making the director's chair vacant for Denis Villeneuve. Why is everything orange in Blade Runner 2049?

While "2049" failed to find an audience in the public, it was a hit with critics gaining a slew of five-star reviews and an overall Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 88%.
Blade Runner 2049 is certainly a Denis Villeneuve film with his impressive visuals, striking colours and imagery. The pacing of the film may be rather slow but probably it was the intention of Villeneuve to make the audience really take in the shots on screen.
Despite this, it was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, grossing just $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $150–185 million for a reported loss of $80 million.
However, he later learns that, even if the memory is real, it was not his own but Dr Ana Stelline's. Through her work, Dr Stelline shared her memory with K, and this allowed him to understand what it was like to walk in her shoes, but most importantly, to believe himself a free, loved replicant.
Because of this memory, K became convinced that he was Rachael and Deckard's child, but was eventually informed by Freysa that he was not and that the child was female. With this revelation, K soon determined that Stelline was the child. K took Deckard to Stelline's lab as she interacted with a snowfall hologram.

Later at K's apartment, he informed Joi of his conclusion that his memory was indeed real. This overjoyed her, as she always believed him to be special, insisting that he now be called "Joe." Unsure, K sought further information and Joi suggested finding the one responsible for creating memories for replicants.
His perfect match would disobey her programming to help him. Regardless of your opinions on the above, I do think that the movie clearly says that Joi's love for K was programmed/created by a corporation. But he loves her back.
When K was meeting with Ana and she confirms for him that the memory was real and that it happened, K shows his first bout of strong emotion in the movie by yelling god damn it and storming out.
The corporation also brought digital technology back to the planet's citizens with the introduction of the Wallace Datalink Network. Replicant prohibition was lifted in 2036 with the introduction of the Nexus-9. Despite the pressure to leave Earth, many humans continued to live on the overcrowded planet as of 2049.
Tweets and blogs cited the fact that female characters were treated as sex objects, and that the narrative was almost entirely driven by men, including Ryan Gosling's replicant-hunter K and his predecessor Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). Outrage quickly spread, including from those who had not yet seen the film.
Most of the characters in the movie are human, with the exception of (without giving too much away) K, Luv, Joi, Deckard, and the members of the Replicant underground. A major plot point of Blade Runner 2049 is that the presence of Replicants on Earth has been severely restricted.
One of the most significant – and moving – sequences in Blade Runner 2049 arrives in its third act, when K learns that he is not, in fact, Deckard and Rachael's missing child. K is what he was told he was all along: a replicant, nothing more, nothing less.
In the opening scene, Agent K (Ryan Gosling), one of these Nexus-9 Replicants, travels to a protein farm outside Los Angeles in his flying Spinner vehicle, where he has tracked down an older model Replicant called Sapper Morton (Dave Bautista), who is part of a group of Series 8 Replicants that have gone AWOL.
Looking back on the effort now, Villeneuve calls 2049 one of his most difficult efforts, partially because he wanted to craft a “love letter” to Blade Runner. From the outside looking in, it certainly paid off, but the Dune director seems to regret approaching such a specific property in the first place.
