Despite his character's name, Mr Depp has evidently decided that he is not comfortable with the 'Allo 'Allo Franglais voices imposed on everyone else, so he plays him as an Irishman with what is supposed to be an Irish accent.
Chocolat is a bittersweet tale of temperance, or rather, a story of the struggle to achieve temperance when the Catholic Church meets a formidable advisory in a two thousand year old recipe for hot chocolate. While the church tries to repress carnal nature, cocoa is the aphrodisiac that unlocks primordial passions.
This is a terrific film, with superb performances and direction, based upon the amazing but tragic true life story of Rafael Padilla, known as 'Chocolat', a black colonial slave who escaped to France as a child and became famous there as a circus clown.
Filming took place between May and August 2000 in the medieval village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in the region of Burgundy and on the Rue De L'ancienne Poste in Beynac-et-Cazenac in Dordogne. The river scenes were filmed at Fonthill Lake at Fonthill Bishop in Wiltshire and interior scenes at Shepperton Studios, England.

The narrator (Vianne's daughter Anouk) tells us, as told by Vianne, how Vianne's mother was a South American healer from a tribe of wanderers, who traveled from town to town teaching their healing arts, never staying in one place too long. Her father was a French apothecary.
Vianne, we learn from her personal thoughts, is a witch, though she does not use the word. Her mother and she were wanderers, going from one city to another. Her mother strove to inspire the same need for freedom in her daughter, who is more social and passive.
Juliette Binoche went to a chocolate shop in Paris to learn how to make chocolates. Some of the chocolates she made were used in the festival scene. When we finally see him hopping away, Anouk's imaginary "kangaroo", Pantoufle, was played by a wallaby.
Red represents passion and sensual pleasure, reflecting her right to these things, rather than her empty life with her husband—when she tries to recall loving him, she says, “[I]t's all a blank. Nothing there at all” (220).
However, a way in which Vianne attempts to further her place in the community is by helping Armande reconnect with her grandson, Luc, and estranged daughter Caroline, who works for Le Comte and disapproves of Armande much in the same way she disapproves of Vianne.
Pantoufle is her magical rabbit who follows her everywhere and can be seen only by other persons of magic.…more. [close] She's the eldest daughter of Vianne, though we don't know anything about her father. She's free-spirited and willful and is very talented in the use of magic.
According to Langham, those who favour dark chocolate tend to be pragmatic problem solvers who are excited about the future. Whereas those who prefer milk chocolate are romantic at heart and like to dwell on the past.
Chocolat, like its rich, creamy namesake, is charming, and satisfying. Given the billing of actors, and the film's director (Lasse Hallstrom of The Cider House Rules) and production team (the Weinstein brothers), one would expect the film to be well put-together, and it is. Judi Dench is, as always, impeccable.
Caroline Clairmont visits the shop and meets Vianne. Also Josephine Muscat comes into the shop and steals because she is so desperate for something to eat because her husband has let her get to the that stage.
Later in the novel when Vianne's best friend, Rachel de Champlain, is deported to a concentration camp, she adopts Rachel's three-year-old son, Ari, and renames him "Daniel" to hide his Jewish identity. Soon after, Vianne becomes responsible for hiding nineteen more Jewish children in a nearby abbey's orphanage.
Vianne almost gives up when she feels the call of the north wind near the end of the movie, but… she chooses to send the wind and her mother's ashes with it, on its way. I like thinking of the wind as a force to move us in a new direction, or to encourage us to put down stronger roots. We can choose.
In 2000, her 1999 novel CHOCOLAT was adapted to the screen, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. She is an honorary Fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and in 2022 was awarded an OBE by the Queen.
