If you've read all the way to the end of A Series of Unfortunate Events (and you'll know if you got there, because the last book is called The End), then you'll be aware that Count Olaf once had a love affair with Kit Snicket, Lemony's sister.
In flashbacks, it is shown that Count Olaf was engaged to Kit Snicket, his father was the chief of the city's official fire department, and his mother had died in a fire. His father was accidentally killed one night at the opera by a poison dart thrown by Beatrice Baudelaire that was meant for Esmé Squalor.
As Olaf is dying, Count Olaf kisses her gently on the mouth, saying that he told her he'd do that one last time, a possible implication that the two were romantically involved before Olaf became a villain. Right before Olaf dies, the two recite a bit of poetry together.
Although this was a long-standing fan theory (his last words are “Kit”), the series finally confirms that the third triplet was Kit's baby daddy, and the father of Beatrice Baudelaire II.
Why was Count Olaf so obsessed with the Baudelaires?
The fortune is Count Olaf's main incentive for tormenting the Baudelaires in the first place, but it has been debated that the primary reason for his involvement in the Baudelaires' lives could be something else that not been made entirely certain, such as his negative relationship with the Baudelaire parents.

Why did Beatrice Baudelaire not marry Lemony Snicket?
We can assume that Beatrice at one time believed that Snicket was dead. When Lemony was revealed to be alive, she had already married Bertrand and she could not marry him.
He has two younger siblings, Lemony Snicket and Kit Snicket. He was murdered in jail as he was about to be burned at the stake by Count Olaf (disguised as Detective Dupin), who intended to frame Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire.
While the books imply his parents were murdered, in the TV series, he lost his mother in a fire and his father was later killed by Beatrice, explaining his hatred for the Baudelaire children.
So it seems likely that the Baudelaire parents helped Kit kill Olaf's parents so she could seduce him and steal his money. Make no mistake: Kit is no saint, otherwise Olaf would never have fallen in love with her. She stole something in the Museum of Objects in “All the Wrong Questions”.
Count Olaf disguises himself as Kit Snicket in an attempt to sneak onto the island; he claims to be very pregnant (though he asks for alcohol), having been looking for the Baudelaires, and at one point claims to be Olaf's girlfriend.
The consensus amongst the fandom is that Violet and Quigley held hands and/or kissed. Back in the old days a lot of fanfiction writers tried to rearrange this “missing passage” as a writing exercise.
At some point between the night at the opera and her appearance in the second season, Kit and Dewey became romantically involved, and she became pregnant with his child. The two planned to leave VFD together and raise their child somewhere far away.
She was also a former love interest of Count Olaf, although it is unknown whether he became her boyfriend because he loved her, or because she would help him with his schemes.
The plan to marry Violet Baudelaire to gain the inheritance went awry. Violet managed to thwart Olaf's plan by signing the marriage with her left hand instead of her right, which as she was right-handed, was the required one to make it legally binding.
The Baudelaires and Ishmael go back to the other side of the island, where the mutiny is already underway. Ishmael harpoons Olaf in the stomach, inadvertently shattering the helmet containing the Medusoid Mycelium, a deadly fungus, infecting the island's entire population.
No matter how dark the world may seem, there are good, noble people in it who will do the right thing. But in the final episode, as the villain Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) dies, he manages to break that one ideal not with deeds, but with his own carefully chosen words.
The final season of A Series of Unfortunate Events is set to premiere on Jan 1, and though the lives of the Baudelaire orphans has been anything but easy, the show manages to end on a positive note. The Baudelaires get a happy ending in the Series of Unfortunate Events finale, but it comes at a cost.
In this canon, the Sugar Bowl was stolen from Esmé Squalor at La Forza del Destino, unintentionally causing the death of Count Olaf's father; Beatrice and Lemony stole the Sugar Bowl, which contained an immunization to the Medusoid Mycelium, in an attempt to keep it out of the wrong hands.
Olaf was coerced into killing the Baudelaire parents and was only an accomplice to the murder. Olaf feels that Bertrand and Beatrice are responsible for their own death and that they essentially brought it upon themselves.
Kit Snicket gave birth to Beatrice on the island; she died as a result of poisoning by the Medusoid Mycelium, and gave her daughter to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire to raise. When Beatrice opened her eyes for the first time, she saw the sunrise and cried.
Later, we learn that it isn't in fact all he knows how to do since Olaf was originally on the “good” side of the schism — but after Beatrice (Morena Baccarin) accidentally kills his father with a poison dart, making him an orphan, he does what any person facing a tragic loss would do and decides to turn his back on the ...
Montgomery had ever learned Sebald Code, and as a result they did not realize this. The Baudelaire orphans were aware that Stephano was Olaf in disguise, but they were unable to convince Montgomery.
“You're right,” she said finally, to Count Olaf, “this marriage, unfortunately, is completely legal. Violet said 'I do,' and signed her name here on this paper. Count Olaf, you are Violet's husband, and therefore in complete control of her estate.”
