Darth Vader is the evil persona projected by a good man. Vader is undoubtedly evil, however the Emperor has said countless times that he still has a spark of light left in him that he has failed time and time again to squash.
In reference to the title, Darth Vader was neither 100% good, nor bad. He started with good intentions but hate drove him down a bad path. Nevertheless, in the end of Star Wars the character showed that there was always some good left inside him and he returned from the Dark Side.
History. Before he became a disciple of the dark side, Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker, a goodhearted Jedi and hero of the Clone Wars. While he was considered one of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, Anakin had broken the Order's code by secretly marrying Senator Padmé Amidala.
Vader's tyrannical brutality is top-tier, showing no mercy whatsoever. While many believe that his tragic origin story is what qualifies him as an anti-hero rather than a villain, Vader seems to walk the line between villain and anti-hero.
Darth Vader's nicest moment may not be anything over the top or heroic, but when his life is coming to an end, Darth Vader decides he wants to see his son with his own eyes. He removes his mask, and while this makes him die quicker, it allows him to see Luke properly for the first time.
So, if not Palpatine, who could Vader possibly fear? Well, the answer is deceptively simply, yet incredibly shocking all at the same time: Luke Skywalker.
The short answer is yes, without a doubt, Vader regretted becoming a cybernetic monstrosity. First, there's the constant pain and discomfort from his suit. Worse, however, is the psychological pain. Vader destroyed everything he had ever known for a chance to save Padme.

James Luceno's novel Tarkin confirms the Grand Moff had deduced who Darth Vader really was. Tarkin had worked with Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, and he found the Dark Lord of the Sith eerily familiar, even recognizing some of his tactics.
The obvious explanation comes down to poor overall planning. While James Earl Jones voiced Darth Vader and David Prowse played the villain in costume, Lucasfilm brought in Sebastian Shaw for the unmasking scene. At this point, the English actor was already 78 years old.
During his fight with Luke Skywalker his suit was partially damaged (he had his arm cut off… again). So technically the explanation in RotJ was correct; Vader did die from massive electrical trauma to his body and suit.

One possible explanation for Darth Vader's somewhat shocking lack of power comes from Jedi: Survivor's placement in the Star Wars timeline. The story takes place in 9 BBY, which is the same year that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set.
Vader constantly regretted what he had done - he knew he made an unbelievable mistake. But, he also knew that it was much too late to change anything. He had to live up to what he had done - and the best way to do that was through embracing his hatred and anger, letting it grow and fester in him.
Anakin Hated Obi-Wan Because of an Imagined Relationship With Padme. Although Padme and Obi-Wan's affair couldn't have been further from the truth, Anakin apparently built up a scenario in his mind, which was only heightened by the Jedi Council's obfuscation in other areas.
The added risk Darth Vader takes in allowing children to live in a situation where he could have killed them proves that he regrets killing Younglings and will avoid harming any more children for the rest of his days, though intense intimidation is a dark strategy to avoid repeating his Youngling massacre.
During the battle, Anakin, who had been known as the Sith Lord Darth Vader, was redeemed by Luke and brought balance to the Force. However, the redemption cost Anakin his life, having been mortally wounded by the Emperor, Darth Sidious, while killing his former Master. After his death, Anakin became one with the Force.
Palpatine was disappointed in Vader. That is, until he sensed Vader was trying to use his son Luke to aid him in taking him down at last. He envisioned three outcomes: One, that Luke would slay Vader and embrace Palpatine as his master. Two, that Vader would slay Luke and prove himself to be the worthy successor.
However, this brief interlude of peace for the agonized fallen Jedi confirms that Qui-Gon Jinn, unique among the members of his former Order, is remembered with fondness, and furthermore, respect by the Dark Lord of the Sith.
Vader has done unquestionably villainous things during his turn to the dark side and his life as a sith lord. However, he is not entirely a villain. I believe he would have stayed with the Jedi if the Emperor had not corrupted his beliefs and manipulated him to think the dark side would serve him better.
