Ultimately, in Mockingjay, it was undeniable that Katniss was completely in love with Peeta. Even though both Gale and Peeta are great men who wanted the best for Katniss, there's no doubt Peeta was kinder, and more loyal and understanding. These qualities made Peeta way better as a character and as a love interest.
Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him. The debate between Peeta and Gale continues among fans.
For the most part, one of Gale's best traits in The Hunger Games is that he is viewed as a hero. He helps lead the charge against the Capitol and Katniss made very similar decisions in her quest to pull down the regime (including her infamous arrow shot at the new leadership).
When Katniss comes home to District 12, Gale immediately confesses his love for Katniss, and she realizes she might have feelings for him, too — but she can't explore them, because she has to continue her fake relationship with Peeta or else her entire family, including “cousin Gale,” will be killed.

His parents were abusive, or at least distant. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had his family survived, but no one missed them much.

Even though he goes through a lot, he remains tender, considerate, and loving. While Gale isn't a bad person, he lacks Peeta's easygoing and softhearted personality, which ultimately is what Katniss admires the most about Peeta.

In Mockingjay, Katniss defied Gale's wishes when he was captured because she didn't want to see him dead. It seems like a nice thing for her to do, especially since Gale is soon able to escape out of the Peacekeepers' grasp because of the rebellion's "distraction".
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.
Gale is jealous of Peeta and the relationship he has with Katniss, and he wants Katniss to decide between them, though he doesn't press Katniss during her recovery in District 13. Gale is an excellent hunter and excels at setting snares and traps.
Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.

Gale's jealousy towards Peeta stemmed from his feelings for Katniss and his desire to be with her. Even after Katniss became engaged to Peeta, Gale still harbored feelings for her and was unable to fully let go of his jealousy and resentment towards Peeta.
If Katniss hadn't volunteered, Prim most likely would have been killed and would not have won as her sister did. Prim was an intelligent, compassionate, and courageous individual with excellent medical skills, but she didn't have the combat skills or selective ruthlessness needed to win.
He was actually helpful during the revolution. Unlike Peeta who was busy being brainwashed, working for President Snow, and wearing white after Labor Day — though again, not entirely his fault — Gale fought beside Katniss during the revolution.
Eventually his personality went back to normal, and he never lost his grip on reality again. But even years afterwards, he still experienced flashbacks, and had to grab onto something solid while he waited for them to pass.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
They have grown apart and changed; maybe that would have happened even without their roles in the rebellion. Although she will never know for sure, Katniss does recognize that she cannot be with Gale. She will never be able to forgive him for his idea — the parachute bombs — that killed Prim.
Gale was responsible for creating weapons that would trigger a second wave of bombs to target first responders and combat healers. This invention potentially ended up killing Prim, but even if he wasn't directly responsible, Katniss found this tactic so abhorrent that she lost her affection for him.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
The woods are now ruined. Katniss decides that the Capitol views her and Gale's weekly hunting trips — and the one time that Gale unexpectedly kissed her, which Snow knows about — as flaunting her defiance in front of the entire district.
After Prim's death, Gale leaves voluntarily because neither of them can avoid the matter of Prim's death having been caused by Gale's invention, with Katniss letting him go without a word. Katniss subsequently grows back together with Peeta, whom she finds she loves again now that he is recovered from his hijacking.
Peeta, Annie, and Beetee vote no, while Johanna and Enobaria vote yes. After some thought, Katniss demands to kill Snow. Once she receives an agreement, she votes yes, for Prim. Realizing something is up (as Katniss would never do that), Haymitch votes yes, too.
At the end of Mockingjay, Gale relocates to District 2 and begins working in the district's government. He helps train replacements for the Capitol's Peacekeepers.
