Initially unaware his best friend is Spider-Man and father is the Green Goblin, Harry secretly witnessed Norman apparently die fighting Spidey and learned the truth about both men. Swearing revenge on Spider-Man, Harry became the new Green Goblin after inheriting Oscorp from his father.
Meanwhile, Harry finds love with Liz Allan and marries her, and they have a son Normie, named after his father. Though his descent into madness after taking the Goblin formula lands him in a superhuman prison. Liz couldn't testify against Harry so he was released from captivity.
As Green Goblin, Osborn became the first great enemy of Spider-Man. Both alters eventually discovered that Spider-Man's identity was Parker and became enemies with Mary Jane Watson. In their final battle, he was accidentally impaled and killed by his own Goblin Glider.

By preventing Tom Holland's Peter from killing the Green Goblin in what would be an almost identical scene to the one in Spider-Man's, Tobey Maguire's Peter not only fixed his failure of not previously saving Norman, but also prevented Holland's from falling down a dark path.
Although the Green Goblin was an excellent foe and actually had a connection to Aunt May before he killed her, the initial execution of her passing might have seen an even darker version of Spider-Man arise than what was seen during his final battle with the Goblin.
