In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Neville is actually the person who destroys Voldemort's last Horcrux in Nagini, rendering him mortal, meaning that he and Harry truly delivered the final blows to Voldemort.
In the book, Voldemort dies like a regular human. His curse once again rebounds (because the Elder Wand actually belongs to Harry) and he falls flat on his ass, leaving behind a very evident and mundane corpse, which was his absolute worst fear.
For the second time in Voldemort's life, the unforgivable curse rebounded on him, as the Elder Wand wouldn't kill its master. Since Harry and his friends had already destroyed all of Voldemort's Horcruxes, this finally ended Lord Voldemort's life, with Harry finally defeating the Dark Lord.
The Prophecy states that the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord would be born at the end of July to parents who had defied Voldemort three times. Both Harry and Neville Longbottom fit this description, but Voldemort chose to apply the Prophecy to Harry.
By doing the predictable, Harry acted unpredictably and defeated Voldemort, not by killing him, but allowing the Dark Lord's evil nature to be his own undoing, unintentionally slaying himself. Harry is victorious through his cunning, patience, persistence, and by building alliances, rather than executing his enemies.

Due to his humiliation in the Triwizard Tournament, Cedric eventually becomes a Death Eater and kills Neville Longbottom. Due to Neville's death, the final Horcrux Nagini was never destroyed, and as a result Voldemort is never defeated, kills Harry and takes over the Wizarding World.
The prophecy is mentioned throughout the series, however, it never exclusively mentions that Harry is The Chosen One and suggests Neville was another option. However, one theory explains why, in reality, this wasn't possible.

Initially, Voldemort twisted Harry into the position by first looking at his lineage. Tom Riddle and Harry Potter were both half-bloods, which meant Harry was more like him than the pureblooded Neville. From there, Voldemort focused specifically on the Potters, who had defied him to no end.
