"Pacific Rim" is not based on a book. It is an original story created for the 2013 film directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film was written by Travis Beacham, del Toro and Drew Pearce.
Del Toro drew inspiration from Francisco Goya's The Colossus, and hoped to evoke the same "sense of awe" with the film's battles. In both, military coalitions from across the world band together to create giant robots to combat interdimensional and extra-planetary threats, respectively.
