Warner Bros. Most fans probably remember that the bodiless remains of Voldemort hid in an Albanian forest to regain strength after baby Harry defeated him in the First Wizarding War. He also returned to the same forest after his host body, Quirrell, was killed in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."
When Voldemort was at school, he gained the Grey Lady's confidence and she told him that she'd hidden the diadem in Albania. After he finished school, Voldemort went to Albania and retrieved the diadem. He then proceeded to make it into a horcrux.
Once again, Voldemort chose a personal place to hide the Horcrux. In his youth, Riddle had tortured two children from his orphanage in a nearby cave. It was here, he chose to return to, and thus hid the locket once he had turned it into a Horcrux. For this kill, he simply chose a local Muggle to be his victim.
Contrary to what is shown in the movie, Helena had no idea that Voldemort had defiled the diadem with dark magic and made it into a horcrux. She didn't even know he possessed it. When Harry asks her about the lost Diadem, she tells him that she had ran to the forests of Albania to hide, ashamed of what she'd done.

Helena hides the diadem in an Albanian forest because of its remoteness, making the diadem incredibly difficult to find. The "lost" diadem of Ravenclaw prompts Voldemort to go on what appears to be a 20-year search because he doesn't return to Hogwarts to apply for a teaching position again for another 20 years.
He had turned the diadem into a horcrux, when he died his split soul was able to pick up where it left off. The diadem was hidden in a forest in Albania after all.
