#1: She Persecuted Muggle-Born Witches & Wizards At the behest of Voldemort's puppet Ministry, the loathsome woman subjects dozens if not hundreds of witches and wizards to false charges of “stealing” magic from “natural-born” magic users and sending them to prison or even subjecting them to the Dementor's Kiss.
Attempting to use the illegal Cruciatus Curse on Harry, despite him being a child. Imprisoning and torturing innocent Muggle-borns under outrageous accusations and under the prejudiced beliefs that these witches and wizards 'stole' their magic from Pure-bloods.
Dolores Umbridge's horrifying personality was shaped by her upbringing and family history, including her disdain for her Muggle mother and Squib brother. Umbridge climbed the ranks at the Ministry of Magic by stealing credit for others' work and manipulating those in power, like Cornelius Fudge.
With the fall of Lord Voldemort, Dolores Umbridge was put on trial for her enthusiastic co-operation with his regime, and convicted of the torture, imprisonment and deaths of several people (some of the innocent Muggle-borns she sentenced to Azkaban did not survive their ordeal).
After hearing about the defensive magic organisation, Dolores Umbridge used her power as Hogwarts High Inquisitor to pass this Educational Decree on 7 October 1995, which forbade the regular meeting of three or more students without the High Inquisitor's consent.
Apparently, Umbridge's mother was a Muggle and her brother was a Squib – a source of huge embarrassment for the family. Perhaps their abandonment and retreat back into the Muggle world had such a huge impact on Umbridge that it became the catalyst for her Muggleborn-targeted cruelty later on in life.
She showed a particular hatred for Harry Potter, as she had no qualms about violently punishing Harry during detentions (though it is possible Fudge told her to be harsh on him).
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.
Hagrid's half-giant status also meant that Umbridge was highly prejudiced against him, viewing him as a "filthy half-breed", and so she became quite determined to get rid of him. Umbridge's biased and insulting inspections of his classes made Hagrid rather nervous, and he was soon placed on probation.
Although Umbridge was not a Death Eater, and had no direct contact with Lord Voldemort, she showed that she was fairly in line with their goals. This was due to Umbridge's callous nature and her prejudiced beliefs, both of which were similar to Death Eater behavior.
It takes a lot for a character to be hated more than the franchise's main villain, but the sheer vitriol that fans feel for Dolores Umbridge certainly does the trick.
Dolores Umbridge's wand was 8" long, made of birch wood with a dragon heartstring core. The wand length was considered "unusually short" by wandmaker Garrick Ollivander. This typically meant that something was lacking in the owner's personality.
The only problem is that she tends to overdo it to the point that it's just as disconcerting. All in all, she's an “amazing” (as far as sociopaths go) example. And as Harry points out, she's arguably just as bad as, if not worse than, any Death Eater.
She persecutes Muggle-born wizards and witches under false accusations of stealing magic, sentencing them to be either kissed by Dementors or sent to Azkaban. While not a Death Eater like Voldemort or Bellatrix , Umbridge stands out as one the most loathsome characters due to how realistic her threat level is.
Dolores Umbridge, in her position as the Head of this department, enjoyed her newfound authority and sadistically tormented the many Muggle-borns; she assigned many of her subordinates to produce anti-Muggle pamphlets in an autonomous manner, and seemed rather unpopular due to her tyrannical and sadistic manner.
Umbridge, though frightened, shamelessly insulted the centaurs with racial slurs and her wizarding arrogance, calling them 'filthy half-breeds' and 'creatures of near-human intelligence'. When the centaurs made threatening moves, Umbridge cast the Incarcerous Spell on the centaur Magorian.
Despite being a teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, she openly hates kids, and due to this took great pleasure in enforcing torturous punishments on students. When she realized she was tricked when Hermione and Harry lured her to the Forbidden Forest, Umbridge flatly said "I really hate children".
Whilst attempting to protect Hagrid from being sacked by Umbridge, McGonagall was attacked by Umbridge's Aurors and was sent to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
If you have only seen the films, you might be surprised to hear that it wasn't Cho Chang who betrayed Dumbledore's Army to Professor Umbridge – it was Marietta Edgecombe. A friend of Cho's and a fellow Ravenclaw, Marietta (reluctantly) joined the DA.
Peter Pettigrew (a.k.a. Wormtail) is one of two Death Eaters known to have been in a House other than Slytherin (Gryffindor) while at Hogwarts. There, he was a close friend of Sirius Black, James Potter, and Remus Lupin, although he was the least intelligent and least talented of the group.
A Ministry of Magic bureaucrat who was able to indulge in her sadistic tendencies when she was posted to Hogwarts as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, Dolores Umbridge was famous for her sickly pink wardrobe and her particularly violent taste for corporal punishments.
Their relationship ends when the D.A. is exposed following Marietta Edgecombe's betrayal of the group to Umbridge. Cho defends her friend's actions by saying that Marietta simply made a mistake.
Why did Harry's scar hurt when Umbridge touched him?
J. K. Rowling stated that the pain from Harry's scar on his forehead was caused by the piece of Voldemort's soul trying to leave his body through the wound it entered to rejoin its master's soul.
J.K. Rowling has answered this question with one of her new stories on Pottermore. In her history of Dolores Umbridge, she stated that Umbridge was in Slytherin.
