According to the official comic book spin-offs of "Fury Road," at some point in the near future, black fuel (what they call oil in the franchise) started to run out, causing riots and wars over control of the remaining sources of oil — later referred to as the Fuel Wars.
The after-effects of nuclear warfare obviously had grave consequences on the world, and one of these effects could have been the evaporation of the world's oceans.

Immortan Joe keeps a whole crew of women captive in order to harvest their breast milk and use it for sustenance for him and his closest. Essentially, these women are slaves, used only for their bodies' ability to produce milk, which he also commodifies, and then trades with Gas Town and the Bullet Farm.

The series follows Max, initially a police officer in a future Australia which is experiencing societal collapse due to war, critical resource shortages, and ecocide. When his wife and child are murdered by a vicious biker gang, Max kills the gang in revenge and becomes a drifting loner in the Australian Wasteland.
What caused the world to become such a wasteland in the Mad Max franchise? Very little is addressed in the movies, according to creator interviews, this is what happened: The Persian Gulf War lasted two days and left the country destabilized, with all of their rigs burning. They instantly stop exportations of oil.
The War boys all appear to suffer from some sort of terminal disease - most commonly lymphoma. Healthy children are a rarity in the wastes and for those born with the affliction, signing on with Immortan Joe is the only way to prolong their short, miserable lifespans.
It is also believed that the more chrome something is, the more glorious it is. Most prominently, near death War Boys will huff chrome spray paint in their final moments to enter into a dissociative high that will lead them on the road to Valhalla, and give them cool chrome coloured teeth and mouth.
But the gang, led by the cunning Toecutter stalked the Rockatanskys. Ruthlessly, they ran down and murdered both his son and wife before his eyes, deaths which had an obviously psychologically shattering effect on Max, transforming him into a bitter being full of hatred and anger.
Nobody died in Mad Max, Hooper or Where Eagles Dare. These myths arise when people see a stunt that looks convincing (perhaps by going slightly wrong) and swapping scare stories. The high fall in Hooper preceded one for the movie Steel, in which AJ Bakunas did die.
Mad Max: Fury Road focuses on Nux (Nicholas Hult), a War Boy who used Max's blood to keep himself alive. Like the rest of the War Boys, Nux was very white from head to toes and had severe health issues, which is why he and the rest needed blood transfusions.
The approach was necessary for the original, as Mad Max's very limited budget meant that recording too much dialogue would have been prohibitively expensive.

Although he doesn't have a central role in the prequel, Mad Max will appear in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. During a panel at CCXP23, Miller said that Max was “lurking” somewhere in the world of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga while confirming that the movie took place 15 years before the events of Fury Road.
