Gaston appears as the villain of Belle's stage. Here, he plots to manipulate the villagers into believing the Beast's castle is evil and should be destroyed. To do so, he breaks into the dark castle and tries to capture Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts, hoping to use them as proof of the castle's dark magic.
Gaston is proud, boorish, uncultured, impolite, and sexist. He was also arrogant, as evidenced by his setting up a wedding before he even proposed to Belle under the expectation that she'd approve of becoming his wife. He was also convinced that he is powerful enough to defeat the bigger and stronger Beast by himself.

Gaston was Belle's greatest enemy. He wanted to marry her by any means necessary just because she was the most beautiful girl he laid eyes on. Why is Gaston a narcissist?
The first criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a grandiose sense of self-importance. Gaston does this through exaggerating his talents and his expectation to be recognized as superior. He overdecorates his tavern with all of his hunting trophies, and takes somewhat of a leadership role in the town.
It is also implied that this incarnation of Gaston, he is far more damaged than the original. In an interview, Luke Evans pointed out that Gaston struggles with PTSD symptoms.

In the animated movie, Gaston pays a man to take Maurice to a mental hospital against his will after Belle refuses his advances. In the live-action version, his betrayal is far worse. He attempts to help Maurice retrieve Belle from the castle—if only to make himself look better.
In Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," Gaston hates Belle because she is not interested in him romantically and does not fit his ideal image of a woman. He is also jealous of her affection for the Beast, whom he sees as an inferior and unworthy rival.
