Most Hobbits (and a lot of Men) in The Lord of the Rings called Gandalf "Gandalf." The name meant "Wand Elf" in the common tongue, which spoke to the physical staff that he carried with him.
Over the years, Gandalf became his most common name, given to him by the humans of Arnor. However, Mithrandir was another popular name for Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings. This was Gandalf's Sindarin name, used by the Elves and later the citizens of Gondor.
For most of his manifestation as a wizard, Gandalf's cloak is grey, hence the names Gandalf the Grey and Greyhame, from Old English hame, "cover, skin". Mithrandir is a name in Sindarin meaning "the Grey Pilgrim" or "the Grey Wanderer".

Gandalf met a similar situation when he arrived at Rohan in The Two Towers. There, Gríma Wormtongue called him "Láthspell," which meant "Ill-news." Likewise, a possessed Theoden called Gandalf "Stormcrow," referring to Gandalf's propensity to show up when trouble was afoot.
If this wizard is Gandalf, the fact that he was saved by and fought alongside a harfoot when he first arrived in Middle-earth could explain why Gandalf is so fond of hobbits, descendants of the harfoots, and often travels to the Shire to visit them.
