After Bond wins the tournament, Le Chiffre kidnaps Vesper, and Bond gives chase. They fall into Le Chiffre's trap and are tortured by him and his thugs, but are saved by the mysterious Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), who shoots and kills Le Chiffre for losing his organisation's money.
It is later revealed that she had been threatened with Bond's death if she didn't acquiesce to Le Chiffre's demands. No Time to Die included a reminder of this crucial scene early on to remind Bond (and the audience) that love is a dangerous game.
Bond may still have felt that he could have helped Vesper if she had taken her own life, but in the movie version of Casino Royale, it is unambiguous that Vesper locks herself in the elevator because she believes it is impossible for both her and Bond to escape at the same time.

Vesper Lynd's Death Propels James Bond's Character Arc
Her betrayal — she was secretly working for Quantum — is the one thing that forces Bond to realize what being a spy really means, and her sacrifice makes his character all the more poignant throughout the franchise.

They transfer the winnings into the Treasury account, declare their love for each other, and Bond decides to resign from MI6. They sail off together to Venice.
