As he reaches for the knife, Corey awakens and tries to stop him, but to no avail. Whatever power Michael may have had on him, he's no longer useful to him so he snaps on Corey's neck and continues on his menacing way.
After becoming a town pariah due to a tragic accident, Corey transforms into a Michael copycat. Myers himself acts as a mentor to Corey, but the latter eventually goes on a killing spree posing as The Shape. In the finale, Michael returns to retrieve his mask, and viciously kills Corey for his betrayal.
Corey is a witness to each of Michael's murders in Halloween Ends. He helps Michael kill Doug, observes as he pins Deb to a wall with a knife after his own failed attempt to get her, and unsuccessfully tries to fight back against Michael before the kills him.
The new movie did not outright confirm anything, but it seemed to show a weakened Michael transferring his evil into new serial killer Corey Cunningham, a troubled young man who the Shape spared, for some reason.

Was Corey always evil in Halloween Ends?
A thematic element in Halloween Ends is that not all evil is born, and sometimes it can be forged. In Corey Cunningham's case, his evil was forged. After Laurie grows suspicious of Corey, she approaches his mother.
As Corey attempts to kill Laurie, she shoots him at the top of the stairs, and he falls to the first floor, in a similar manner to Jeremy, the boy that he accidentally murdered. Halloween Ends references Cameron's death in Halloween Kills after Corey falls from the stairs and is later killed by Michael Myers.
However, the movie attempts to compensate for this by writing Corey as a foil to Michael. One theory explaining why Michael did not kill Corey is because he saw they were not so different. After they were charged for their crimes, they were ostracized by Haddonfield and left to dwell on their feelings of resentment.
In Halloween Ends, an injured bullied Corey ends up meeting Michael in the sewers. But just when the slasher's about to kill him, their minds interlock. This psychic link shows how both endured trauma their whole lives, allowing Michael's essence to corrupt Corey.
Corey soon becomes a conduit for Michael, going so far as to wear the iconic mask to get revenge on those who have tormented him in the years since the child died under his care.
Either way, the evil in Michael "transfers" itself to Corey, its power waking up the buried hate inside him. A bond has been formed, and Michael does something he has never done before. He releases Corey and lets him live.
