Rachel Dawes : [narrating her letter to Bruce as Alfred reads it] Dear Bruce.I need to be honest and clear.I'm going to marry Harvey Dent.I love him, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him.
She explains in the letter that because she loves Harvey and thinks that Bruce will not be able to give up his life as Batman, she is going to marry Harvey (but that she will always love Bruce and will remain his friend).
Rachel later gave Alfred the task of giving Bruce a letter, which revealed that she was going to marry Harvey. Alfred later burned the letter, and reflected that, just as the people of Gotham needed to believe in Harvey Dent, despite his actions as "Two-Face", Bruce needed to believe that Rachel still loved him.
Upon Rachel's death, Alfred reads her note (which she deliberately left unsealed) in which she reveals that she intends to marry Dent. She explains that while Gotham may come to no longer need Batman, she now knows that the day when Bruce no longer does will never come.
Alfred told Bruce about the letter that Rachel left for him, which stated that they wouldn't end up together. In The Dark Knight Rises, Alfred read and then burned the letter. He didn't want it to cause Bruce any pain, but this turned out to be a mistake as Bruce didn't believe him after he'd confessed.
While there's no doubt that the Joker tricked Batman into choosing who would die and thus lied about where Rachel was, there's another reason why the Joker had Batman save Harvey Dent.
Katie Holmes was replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes in "The Dark Knight," but her exit was due to personal preference, not creative differences. Holmes left to explore other roles and appeared in the movie "Mad Money" instead.
Because Holmes was unavailable to take on the role, a replacement was sought out. The role ultimately went to Maggie Gyllenhaal, who later received praise for her strong portrayal of the character. Both actors played the role well, ensuring that Rachel Dawes would remain a solid fixture in the Nolan Batman trilogy.
Harvey became Two-Face due to a combination of Maroni's scarring, untreated mental illness, marital stress and his own personal choices. But one has to wonder if Batman and Gordon ever lay awake at night haunted by the role they played in Harvey's downfall.
The sense of loss and justice is too strong in Bruce, and no matter what he says, she felt he will never be able to give up being Batman. Rachel Dawes likely chose Harvey Dent over Bruce Wayne because she saw the potential in him to become a great hero, while she did not believe that Bruce had the capacity to be one.
It is then revealed that the Joker's real name is "Jack Oswald White." Martha then shares that she visited the Flashpoint universe's version of Jack Oswald White, discovering him to be a struggling family man supporting his wife and a child as a janitor at Wayne Casino.
Thomas's letter tells Bruce that the loss he suffered has corrupted him, that he is consumed by his past and is neither a hero or even a good man. He credits those qualities to Barry Allen, due to his ability to move past his own loss and find hope and love again, hinting perhaps that he hopes Bruce can do the same.
Flashpoint Beyond #6 then reveals the full message Bruce's father sent him. It reads, "Dear son, There's only one thing I know about life. I know some things happen by chance. And some things happen because we make them happen.
Should the flipped coin land on the unblemished side, the Joker would live. However, should it fall on the burnt half, he would die. The flip of the coin lands in the Joker's favor, however, and Dent lets the man leave.
For Gotham's sake, Batman lied and took the blame for Harvey's crimes because Gotham needed better heroes than what he could represent. Batman realized his vigilantism inspired both criminals and citizen vigilantes, rather than deterring them.
Why did the Joker take the risk of placing a gun in Harvey Dent's hand? Beacause he's a master manipulator. He knew that there was a 50/50 chance that Dent would pull the trigger especially in his current mental state. He wanted to mess with him.
What did Rachel say to Bruce at the end of Batman Begins?
Rachel Dawes : [Rachel touches Bruce's face] No, no, *this*... is your mask. Your real face is the one that criminals now fear. The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all.
The Joker knew Batman would choose her after seeing him dive out of a window for her, so he intentionally mixed up the locations of the two. This was just another way for the Joker to hurt Batman.
He later finds the part in the letter she is asking about—for him to accept full responsibility for their breakup and sleeping with Chloe—and immediately disagrees with it, still stuck on the fact that she was the one who suggested they "were on a break."
