After Coraline returns to the copy of her flat, the Other Mother offers Coraline the opportunity to stay in the Other World forever, but in order to do so, Coraline must allow buttons to be sewn into her eyes. Coraline is horrified and returns through the door to her home.

The beldam needs human souls to feed on. With a 'Other Coraline', she would starve, and most likely die, killing all inhabitants living in her little twisted 'world'.

Indeed, each mirror and reflection represents her fracturing identity; split into so many images, she becomes unable to align her own identity with the array of images of a different, sexual self whom she does not recognize.
