They catch each others eye, but before they can speak some city guards come along on patrol. The other Gypsies manage to get away, but Esmeralda gets caught and harassed--accused of stealing the money given by passers-by for their performances.
During an assignation with Esmeralda, Phoebus is stabbed by Frollo and Esmeralda is arrested, tortured, and wrongly convicted for murder and witchcraft.
Although Phoebus survives, Frollo accuses Esmeralda of his murder and has her tried and hung as a witch. Frollo blames the destruction of his life entirely on Esmeralda and is intensely bitter that she will not be his lover, even when he threatens her with death as the alternative.
