“Barbie” can help them realize the damaging expectations that society will place on them so that they can confront and deal with those harmful expectations head-on — rather than find ways to denigrate women for those societal expectations or even ignore them.
It also addresses how patriarchy is harmful for men, too, disabling them from getting to know themselves. It was important for Ken to be heard and not be taken for granted by Barbie. Ken needed to find his own place without trumping on Barbie's, nor living a life based on patriarchy and imposed roles (“Kenough”).
Barbie shows us a world where women have power derived from kindness, unity, and self-actualization. She helps the audience believe that not only is that world possible, anything less is unacceptable. She doesn't, however, say creating this world will be easy. It won't be because the real world can be hard.
Key points. Barbie shows how men often translate and funnel existential angst into anger, resentment, and sexual longing. The movie gives a nuanced model of male self-care and self-acceptance.
But Ken's journey teaches us an important lesson. In ultimately learning that he has a purpose outside of Barbie, Ken is able to move beyond his incessant need for female validation and subsequently, his need to control women. From my experience, Barbie is an opportunity for introspection.
