Dr. Abraham Van Helsing is a Dutch medical doctor and philosopher whose vast knowledge of modern and folk medicine makes him the natural leader in the effort to destroy Dracula. He alone can grasp the range of fronts on which the vampire must be attacked.

It's never confirmed what happened, but it's strongly implied that Martha either died in the fire started by the humans or that someone had snuck in and attacked her. In order to protect her, Dr. Van Helsing suggests that Mina should be kept out of their conflict with Dracula, to which her husband and the other men agree. Soon, Dracula drinks her blood and forces her to drink his, thus beginning to transform her into a vampire.
