Dorothy and her friends have a dream. Well, they have four of them, actually. Stop us if you've heard this one before. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy wants nothing more than to go home, the Scarecrow wants a brain, the tin man wants a heart, and the Lion wants courage.
In the movie of The Wizard of Oz, it is quite obvious that Oz is a dream; Dorothy wakes up in the end in the very same house that she flew in to Oz, surrounded by people who saw her sleeping the whole time. Many of these people took part in her dream as different characters, which is a fairly common feature of dreams.
In the movie, Dorothy gets knocked out by a flying window during the cyclone scene. She eventually lands in Oz but by the movie's end, she wakes up in her bed with her family surrounding her. This reassures the viewer that the whole ordeal was simply a dream. In the book, however, there is no dream.
Question: Does the Wizard of Oz ever explain how Dorothy actually got there or was it all just a dream? Minor Spoiler (The film came out in 1939): The film itself was supposed to be a dream/hallucination of Dorothy that comes from the blow to the head that she received during the tornado.
Throughout the novel, Dorothy reiterates this desire to return home; at one point, she tells the Scarecrow, "No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful.

What mental illness does Dorothy have?
Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)
We're no shrinks, but it seems like Dorothy could be suffering from HPD, a disorder that manifests itself through attention-seeking behavior, intense theatricality, and a shallow array of emotions.
She became known for her social justice campaigns in defense of the poor, forsaken, hungry and homeless. She espoused nonviolence, and hospitality for the impoverished and downtrodden.
Dorothy wakes up in the strange, magical Land of Oz. She meets the Munchkins and Glinda, the good witch, who informs her that her house killed the Wicked Witch of the East when it landed in Oz. Just as the Munchkins finish celebrating her death, the Wicked Witch of the West shows up.
In "Twister," "Dorothy" was a barrel similar to TOTO. It was designed to release hundreds of sensors into the center of a tornado and send the data back to the weather researchers on the ground, Bill Harding and Dr. Jo Harding (played by actors Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, respectively).
from Chapter 23 - Glinda The Good Witch Grants Dorothy's Wish. Glinda the Good stepped down from her ruby throne to give the little girl a good-bye kiss, and Dorothy thanked her for all the kindness she had shown to her friends and herself.
She kisses Dorothy on the forehead, a magical act that serves to protect Dorothy on the journey, because "no one will dare injure a person who has been kissed by the Witch of the North".
Both the book and the film The Wizard of Oz feature iconic scenes of Dorothy, Toto, and the Cowardly Lion (the only flesh and blood members of the gang), lulled to sleep by a field of poisonous poppies. A deadly flower might seem curious at first, but poppies, of course, are no ordinary bloom.
Though Return To Oz takes its cue from The Wizard Of Oz, rather than Baum's books, in portraying Dorothy's trip to the magical land as a dream, the framing device it uses is more sinister.
There are now over 50 novels based upon Baum's original Oz saga. Baum characterized Oz as a real place, unlike MGM's 1939 musical movie adaptation, which presents it as a dream of lead character Dorothy Gale. The main Oz characters in The Wizard of Oz are all counterparts of Dorothy's family and other Kansas characters as a way to emphasize that she is dreaming throughout the film. This is an essential aspect of the 1939 movie, but this isn't the case in The Wiz.
It is 1969, but "F5" and the Fujita scale were introduced in 1971. (at around 1 min) In the scene set in 1969, the TV displays the words, "tornado warning." The National Weather Service did not begin using that term until 1974. The TV should have said, "tornado alert."
Bill and Jo strap themselves to pipes that go down “at least 30 feet”, according to Bill's line. The chances of surviving a direct impact of an F/EF-5 rated tornado with winds greater than 200mph is extremely low. If the wind does not kill you, any flying debris that impacts you will as the force is the velocity cubed.
This tornado is so strong that the storm cellar door is ripped off, and Jo's father (Richard Lineback) is pulled into the storm to his death. Jo, her mother (Rusty Schwimmer), and Toby survive.
Then she kissed the Tin Woodman, who was weeping in a way most dangerous to his joints. But she hugged the soft, stuffed body of the Scarecrow in her arms instead of kissing his painted face, and found she was crying herself at this sorrowful parting from her loving comrades.
In the 1939 movie, Oz from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was altered from a fantasy world (in the novel) to a dream world of Dorothy's; characters who were independent inhabitants of Oz were transformed into dream parallels of introduced Kansas characters.
Dorothy thus is saved from death by the Good Witch's kiss. Beyond that, it's also interesting to note that the Wicked Witch isn't aware that the girl possesses the “silver shoes” of the Witch of the East until Dorothy actually stands before her.
