In the Lord of The Flies the boys seem to lose some qualities when they are trying to survive, The main example of this is Jack. The things that i think they lose the most are sympathy, common sense and the ability to think clearly.
Three characters that lose themselves throughout the novel is Jack, Ralph, and Samneric. Jack loses himself due to the power that has gotten to his head, Ralph loses himself after he loses his power, and Samneric are twins that become so close they mutate into one person.
Jack's innocence is clearly displayed throughout the earlier chapters of the novel. Throughout the novel, his loss of innocence is highlighted in three main ways: his treatment of the pigs on the island, his physical appearance, and his hatred for Ralph, all which display suffering as an effect.
What problems does Jack have in Lord of the Flies?
Right from the start, Jack has a savage nature. He is a cruel bully and picks on those who are weaker than himself. Throughout the novel he gradually turns into a real savage with no sense of justice or what is right. He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling.
Jack from Lord of the Flies is a bad leader because he is impulsive, violent, manipulative, and controlling. He does not put the well-being of the boys first. Instead, he acts on his own insecurities and urges.
Perhaps acting out of some guilt he is unable to acknowledge, Jack becomes paranoid and begins feeding misinformation to his tribe, a typical practice of dictatorships to control the collective thinking by controlling the information that is disseminated.
Jack stole not only Piggy's glasses, but also hope, rescue, Simon's life, Ralph's authority, and the vestiges of civilization from their small island culture.
Jack begins acting ever more like a cruel dictator to his own tribe members, having one of the boys tied up and beaten for angering him. He plans a raid on Ralph's camp to get fire for another pig roast and tries to convince his uneasy followers that they had beaten but not killed the beast the previous night.
At the end of the chapter, Jack and some of his boys raid Ralph's and the boys' shelter, stealing Piggy's glasses in order to have fire for themselves.
Jack's jealousy over Ralph being voted leader fuels his savagery since he is used to being in charge. Each child on the island deals with man vs. self conflict by trying to survive physically and emotionally/psychologically/internally.
What shows loss of innocence in Lord of the Flies?
In this novel, the boys' loss of innocence is brought about through their descent from civilized schoolboys to bloodthirsty barbarians and the murder of their two friends. Although the events are tragic, the author did not write it as a tragedy in the literary sense.
Instead, Ralph is angry that Jack and his hunters let the fire die. Ralph yells at Jack, and Piggy joins in, resulting in Jack slapping Piggy in the face and breaking his glasses. Eventually Jack admits that he was at fault and apologizes for not keeping the fire going.
How does Jack lose his innocence in Lord of the Flies?
In the Lord of the Flies the boys lose their innocence in exchange for savagery or for maturity because of the attitudes towards killing animals and people. Ralph and Piggy lose their innocence and transform into mature people because they oppose killing people and do not enjoy killing animals.
By the end of the novel, Jack has learned to use the boys' fear of the beast to control their behaviour—a reminder of how religion and superstition can be manipulated as instruments of power.
At the end of Lord of the Flies, most of the boys survive. A littlun goes missing after the group builds a fire that gets out of control, and can be assumed to be dead. Simon gets killed by the group after they mistake him for the beast. Finally, Piggy dies when one of the boys in Jack's tribe throws a boulder on him.
They torture Sam and Eric into telling them where Ralph is hiding and scour the woods as though they were hunting a pig. Sam and Eric warn Ralph that Roger has sharpened a stick at both ends, but Ralph does not understand what that means.
Why does Jack hate Ralph? From the beginning, Jack, who is the head choir boy back home, thinks he should be the chief, but the other boys choose Ralph. The tension between Ralph and Jack grows because Jack has different priorities—to hunt and have fun—than Ralph, who wants to hold onto civilization and get rescued.
Jack steals from the giant, first, a hen, then a bag of money, and lastly, a harp that the giant played. Every time Jack would enter the house, the giant would roar, “I smell fresh meat!” (Jack 4). Jack's bravery shown facing the giant was a sign that he wanted to help his family.
The isolation, lack of adults and a change within the boys takes over and they start to destroy their environment. The play violence becomes increasingly menacing as the boys use warpaint and sing a bloodthirsty chant. Eventually death and murder follow. "Kill the beast!
