The first R-rated movie was “The Split,” a 1968 noir starring Jim Brown and Gene Hackman. From The World-Herald archive, an ad for "The Split," the first R-rated movie. The X rating basically just meant “not rated,” and restricted anyone under a certain age, even if they had an adult guardian with them.
TV-MA Mature Audience Only This program is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17. This program contains one or more of the following: graphic violence (V), explicit sexual activity (S), or crude indecent language (L).
The MPA gave the movie an NC-17 rating "for some sexual content." NC-17 is a higher classification than an R rating and means no one under 17 years old can be admitted to see the movie, whereas for rated-R films, those under 17 can see the movie with a parent or guardian. But if you haven't heard, the Motion Picture Association actually gave Barbie, Ken, and the gang a PG-13 rating! It never once crossed my mind that perhaps Barbie might be inappropriate for my 8-year-old daughter. First of all, the movie is being marketed to girls well under 13.
Can a 21 year old take a 15 year old to a rated R movie?
Children under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian over the age of 21 for R-rated movies. I.D. is required for proof of age. Children under 6 years of age are not permitted into R-rated features at all.
Programming rated TV-MA in the United States by the TV Parental Guidelines signifies content for mature audiences. It corresponds to the MPA's R rating for movies, and the ESRB's M rating for video games. Programs with this rating are generally not suitable for people or individuals under 17 (some sources may say 18).
Can a 20 year old take a 11 year old to an R-rated movie?
R: Restricted - Under 17 requires accompanying parent or guardian. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated movies unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian 25 years of age or older.
If a film is listed as a 15 rating or 18 rating, this means that no one under those ages may enter that performance. As this is a regulatory requirement we are unable to make exceptions under any circumstances.
This rating signals that a movie's content may be very graphic and should not be watched by anyone under the age of 18. The film may include very strong language, explicit sex scenes and strong violence.
We reserve the right to require you to prove your age with appropriate photographic ID if you are going to a 12A, 15, 18 film or purchasing an alcoholic drink. If you are unable to prove your age you will be not be able to watch the film or buy an alcoholic drink.
T = Teen. Titles rated T – Teen have content that may be suitable for persons ages 13 and older. Titles in this category may contain violent content, mild or strong language and/or suggestive themes. M = Mature.
Children under 8 years old cannot attend a screening unaccompanied (regardless of film certification). They should be accompanied by an adult aged 18 years or older.
